I keep hearing about the VNT in topics regarding turbo problems and the EGR, can anyone confirm exactly what it is, its location etc and how easy it is to clean?

It's part of how the turbo works inside it. To keep the vanes clear, just give it a bit of a thrashing once in a while. The EGR is at the back of the engine bay, and can be cleaned, or blocked off, to prevent it getting full of **** again
