How not to 'prep' a new car......

Featured Replies

Close friend of mine had asked BMW to sort out a few marks on his new to him BMW he had decided to purchase from them, took me a while to sort out but I think it was worth the effort:

Nick was over the moon with the results and is pretty keen on the whole 'detailing' scene now.................. :p

my wifes is the same colour all be it a 318i and I just hope I can get it to look even close to that

I liked how your lass was doing all the work at the begging whilst you just took the pics lol :giggle:

Spot on as usual you certainly know what your doing!

Very impressive results as usual, one very shiny motor .

How do you avoid the buffer trails? I have done the mother in laws 09 Golf which is Shadow blue metallic. I can see some trails but only in bright sunlight. I used menzerna polish using the mid polish and mid pad and then going on to final finish with the soft yellow pad. Am i not working it long enough or what??

See it's buffer trails like that that made me hate being a valeter! It annoys me how someone can let a car go out like that!

Good results, i wish i had the patience to do detailing. But doing valeting for 4 years made me sick of it all and can't ignite my passion for it again :(

Are you using a Rotary or a DA? Buffer trails are pretty much a given if your using a heavy cut compound pad and polish or your working too fast on the panel, you should be able to remove these with a finishing polish and pad with a slower movement over the panel, just takes time.............. :S

I guess as a valeter at a dealer it's all to do with time, no way would they have hours to do what I did that day but shame you have lost your passion for it............... :S

Cheers - I am using a DA - Thought that it might be the cut of the polish and pad. I have done one panel a lot slower and this seems to have worked better. You can barely see them (she hasn't noticed so not that bad!) and i think some of it is the residue of the wax. I will see more when i wash it again but need a sunny day to see it like yesterday was ;)

You must be really going some to leave buffer trials on a DA.......................... :S

If you shine some light on the panels and then look at different angles you should be able to see the buffer trials fairly easily..........

Thats why i'm thinking it is more of a was residue than trails. The paintwork was pretty shocking when it came out of the showroom!!

I have only just got a DA so was worried i'd done something wrong!

That beemer was shocking - looks like the job they did on my bonnet when i picked it up after i pointed out a mark on the bonnet. Told him to stop and leave it after he got out the rotary, the 3m and the dirty wool pad and applied at full speed!

Sounds like you just need to refine your process a little but I am sure with practice this will be no problem........

You really need to let us know the secret you use to get the lovely Jules to help!!

My missus' idea of helping is to send the 2 kids out with a handful of stones to 'wash' her Furby with :o
