Stub aerials

Thinking ahead (not expecting my SM until the end of the year) I will need ideally to replace the standard aerial with a shorter stub fitting to get under my garage roof in France. As I have specified sat nav in the Yeti, it suddenly occurred to me that this might affect its performance. Any thoughts out there?

Hi there was a thread about this way back and the response seem to say that because the yeti has 2 aerials it made no difference to the reception.(second one is in the glass of the rear window)

if you do a search of the yeti forum you will see photos of the different aerials that have been fitted

all the best with your yeti when you get your hands on it

Does the sat nav share the same aerial as the radio I think is the question.

I don't know the answer, but I doubt it though I'm happy to be wrong.

Yes, that is the issue really - I know that radio reception shouldn't be a problem with the secondary aerial in the rear side window, but is the bee-sting aerial used to pick up GPS signals?

GPS antennae are not constructed like radio whips, so most likely no problem. My Columbus was dealer install, and the antenna is located under the dash somewhere. No reception problems with either the radio or the GPS - even when I forget to put the whip back on after a car wash.

Ditto....black. Radio's fine but Idon't have Sat Nav.

John

A factory fit sat nav has a shark fin aerial at it's base for exclusive use by the sat nav. The radio aerial screws into this and can be changed at will with no effect to radio reception (due to the Yeti having two aerials as stated above and the stubby aerials being OE VW parts if you order from the correct places).

So you can tell by looking at the outside of a car if they have a factory fitted sat nav......

You certainly can and you'll find a thread elsewhere in the general Skoda areas of this forum about how often they get stolen as a result... Causing thousands of pounds of damage to the surrounding dashboard.

This is also why many a chav goes to Halfords to buy a fake BMW shark fin to put on their Novas so their mates think they have a sat nav. Sad.

I think you'll find this is called taste, just because it isn't to yours doesn't make it sad :dull:

Why on earth are they fitting this sort of aerial anyway! It clashes with my garage door and my dealer says they have lots of complaints about this. On a previous car many years ago it was possible to adjust the angle of the aerial, but not the Yeti one. However my dealer reckons that what they do for customers is just cut it down in size and all works OK. Anyone any comments? I have tried in Halfords but cannot find a shorter replacement aerial, but I guess an auto electrical store would have one. Other than cutting, what about putting a bend in it? I note that somebody says the radio works without it but what about the exposed base socket getting wet?

I certainly wouldn't recommend removing the aerial without sealing the mounting hole to prevent water entering the housing. Similarly, bending the aerial will probably cause it to foul the tailgate when you open that!

I suggest just doing a search on eBay for "Skoda Aerial". You'll find plenty of short rubber ones for around £5, or even less.

Or do a search on this site as this has been discussed previously. Good luck!

Speedsport - Never even thought about the tailgate fouling! Have seen several now on Ebay and I cannot see why they should not work. Do you know what size the screw thread is?

I believe it's a standard Hella mount, I think there is some mention of it here

Just snipped my aerial by approx 2" to reduce its length. No adverse effects on radio. Thanks all for your help.

Has anyone tried replacing it with a proper shark-fin?

The Columbus comes with a shark fin and stubby one.

Talking of aerials, when I was in the dealers last week I noticed that the ones on the showroom stock had much thicker ones on. You wouldnt easily snip them. Has the design changed lately?

The aerials shown in post #8 above are what the Yeti came out with since 2009 and this was changed to the shorter, thicker looking one just over a year ago, around November/December 2010.

Don't you mean November/December 2010 if it was a year ago :p

Oops?! Have we had a New Year then! Doh. I'm not in the 2012 swing of things clearly. Yes that is what I meant. I'll fix it above. Ta.

Unfortuantley we have. We are all that little bit older, but not neccessarily that little bit wiser (in my case anyway)

I was actually hoping to be able to get hold of a combined sharks fin for both radio and sat-nav. Içe seen a few cars with only one antenna but now understand that the sat-nav can be on the windscreen.
