Estate dumps water in the boot when I open it

Featured Replies

I'd heard this was a problem on the hatch, but thought the estate was immune. Obviously not!

Is there a fix for this, because I find it hard to believe VAG would have let a design flaw this huge get past testing?

I'm afraid you are going to have to believe it :(

Modern science has found no known cure (I have a hatch)

No matter how slowly or fast you raise the hatch some will always drop into the boot especially if there is a cross wind

Of course, you could always not use the boot

Strange, never had this happen to me on my Scout.

My old Ford Puma, now that's another story!

My previous hatches were a real problem but had no issues with my new estate.

I have the hatch and this happens to me too, and more often than not, the parcel shelf and back seat headrests can get a real good soaking - especially in heavy rain! Not good at all!

Yep same problem but most of the rainwater stands on the hatch just below the window so sweep it off with you hand before opening the hatch. Better to have a wet hand than a wet parcel shelf/headrests.

Funny, after puting the chrome bar on the lid never again happened

Never had that problem with my estate....

Give it a good wax coat and it will run off before you open it :)

Tomorrow I am going to spray it with water and try and work out why it's happening, as it clearly doesn't affect everyone.

I'll report back my findings.

Hope the neighbours don't see me :giggle:

I must admit my hatch is the same. I've got a 1.6 TDi Golf Plus at the minute as a loaner, and that thing is even worse!! Don't worry, as long as there is nothing HUGELY valuable in the boot, does a few drops matter that much?.........(cue lots of angry antique dealers having a dig.............. :giggle: )

It was more than a few drops. Unfortunately, it's left a water mark on the retractable cover (which I am sure will clean off) and left the carpet damp down both sides.

Must get that watering can out...

Bloody hell, it sounds worse than mine then. I've never had a hatch that didn't leak into the boot when you open it, but to varying amounts. I actually get more bloody water come in the car when I open the drivers window than anything.................all over the door card and into the speakers..................stupid!!!!

I've got this theory that it isn't as bad if you open the hatch slowly..............................................

My Mk2 Vrs hatch does it but not as much as the old MK1

My window has rain x on it and so much wax on it really beads so I open slowly then OK.The problem is it doesn't have time to dissipate quickly enough down the channels at the side .It is fine if I do this though if you are parked at an angle, <slope> ie one side of the car is lower than the other you have no chance :S

I spent a bit of time pouring water over the rear of the car and opening the tailgate. I don't think the water is getting in from the outside, as it seems to channel the water away fine.

What seems to be happening is that there is water behind the tailgate trim, which gets tipped out into the boot.

This makes me think that there is leakage from using the rear wash. Unfortunately it's raining again, so I'll have a closer look later.

Is the way to remove the tailgate trim by unscrewing the single screw in the centre of the bottom trim, then unclip?

Oops. All I seem to have succeeded in doing is removing the tailgate lowering handle

I wish there was a Haynes manual for this car. Anyone removed the tailgate trim who can give any tips?

Mystery solved! The high level tailgate light is not fitting correctly, possibly due to some damage, and is letting water leak in. A replacement at £51 has been ordered, and should sort it.

Glad you found the issue and a fix..... but sad it isnt going to solve my issue with the hatch :'(

I'll wait until the brake light is replaced until I declare the problem fixed, don't want to be premature :smirk:

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm glad to say that subsequent to having a new high-level brake light fitted, the problem seems to be resolved :)
