felicia 1.3 lxi problems any suggestions?

Featured Replies

hi there, im having a few problems with me skoda( felicia 1.3 lxi plus estate1996) at the moment and need some advise please. Im disabled and have had the car for 4 yrs and no probs, (just the usual wear and tear issuse) and used to build austin martin engines for a living ( so know a little about car engines.) For the last 3-4 weeks it has been playing up starting, once it starts its fine and doesn't cut out and runs brilliantly. but when it don't start it sounds like the engine is flooded and takes ages to start, ive read about the temperature sensor causing similar probs with starting in the 1.6 vesion, could this be a similar issue.

i took it to my local garage as working on the car is a bit of a problem for me as im disabled and they were useless and suggested a SERVICE! I expalined that i didn't think this was the problem and promptly did a full service my self wth a little help from my mate and suprise it didn't help at all! ( But i saved my self about £70, which the garage didn't appreciate!lol!) ive put a new battery on it and the alternator was replaced 2yrs ago and has tested fine, but im just desperate to get my car back on the road. if anybody has any ideas id love to hear them

cheers everybody regard jamieaspence

As far as I know, VAG-COM will read faults off the Felly's OBD port, so it might be worth seeing if there are any members near you who can help. I go over that way for work on a fairly regular basis, but it'll probably be a couple of weeks until I'm there next I'm afraid...

cheers mate is there a list of people with VAG-COM equipment the garage i usuall use just seems to be suggesting the classic ' service for £85' so being on a buget me and my mate did it and then they haven't got a clue and no diagnostics there. How much does it cost roughly for a diagnostic check ? haven't had one since i stopped building austins!! I think it is to do with the throttle ( as has an electronic choke and i think the ECU controls all of the firering and throttle)

thanks for you reply mate

a replacement coolant sensor is a good place to start, or you could simply try unplugging it to temporarily to see if it cures it...

although i'd agree the best place to start is a diagnostics scan, often faults like these don't show any error codes because the sensor still is showing a reading which is within the normal operating range of the sensor, however you can examine the measuring blocks with vag-com to find out what temperature the ecu is reading from the sensor...

the engine doesn't have an electronic choke as such, it uses the signal from the coolant sensor to activate an 'enrichment' map for the quantity of fuel injected which more or less mimics a choke in the classical sense.

do you know if yours is a single-point or multi-point injection model??

coolant temp sensor (1.3 spi engine) the mpi version is very similar

hi teflon tom,

my cars a single point injection modle with a bosch mono metronic ecu system if that helps cheers for yourr help mate thought it was possibly a sensor but didn't know the sensor worked the enrichment mapping very useful to know mate. the garage i usually use said it was an electronic choke but when i looked at the throttle body that didn't seem to add up so cheers for clearing that up for me mate.

cheers mate and kind regards from jamieaspence

hi mate just disconnected it and it started first try thankyou so much mate and have a new one on order, i will take your advise and get it checked with a diagnostic system when funds allow to just clear any codes.

amazing mate and thankyou very much

regards jamieaspence

If you don't have a light on the dash, I wouldn't worry about clearing any codes unless you're still having running troubles - I never did when I replaced the sensor on my wife's, so-called 'pending' codes (stored but not causing a warning light) clear themselves after a certain number of starts...

hi mate thnaks for your time and knowledge mate, i disconnected the sensor cable and i fired up fires try, didnt realise that this sensor controlled the fuel enrichment ( that will teach me for trusting my garage) they told me that i would be looking at a new throttle body!! i thought this was a bit extreme, think they were a bit miffed i didn't have the service done there and of course a throttle body would cost even more! cheers for your help mate, and i'll see how it goes but fingers crossed the beast will be back to working order shortly!!

cheers again regard jamieaspence :-)

there is no engine check light on the dash on a felicia... don't worry about fault codes, if there are any it will dissapear of it's own accord..

when you fit the new sensor it's worth putting a new o-ring in with too becuase they get a bit persished with age and they sometimes start to seep when you disturb them.. some temp sensors come with a new o-ring depending where you buy them..

don't pull the old sensor out with the engine hot becuase you are likely to loose a bit of coolant, i've been scalded plenty of times like this
