Cambelt or Brakes dilemma

Featured Replies

Have to get these jobs done but have had a load to shell out this month with household appliances going faulty so can only get one of the following 2 jobs done...

Cambelt change which is important and I also need new front Discs and pads and a brake fluid change. The brake pads are only half worn, its because the discs are below the min thickness and the brake fluid is old. The cambelt is due only because of how long its been on (5 years) and not mileage.

which one would you guys do as a priority - I can get the other job done in a few weeks but with the service and these jobs im looking at £516.

The car in question is a Toyota corolla 1.3 16v.

Pay for one now, and one on a credit card for next month?

If you really do have to decide, get the brakes done first and drive as little as possible until you get the cambelt done - but make sure you get the cambelt done ASAP once you have the cash available. You never know when you might need the brakes, but the replacement frequency of the cambelt is based on the probability of it failing during its service life. So while it's still a gamble, waiting a week or two shouldn't make too much of a difference...

HTH

Which item failing would cause you more trouble? Are 1.3 Corolla's prone to cam belts failing? Would a failed cambelt kill the engine? We can assume failed brakes will kill the car, worse still maybe a person! How thin have the brakes worn? I assume you can't borrow a couple of hundred quid off someone for a few weeks?

i thought the 1.3 toyota engine had a chain rather than a belt?? personally i'd get the brakes done first... you can survive the engine blowing up, but it's more difficult surviving the brake failing... neither of which are likely tbh

SAFETY FIRST !! BRAKES A PRIORITY !!!

Find out if a material made belt or chain-driven camshaft, if chain, they'll rattle on for years.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Cheers everyone decided to get the 2 jobs done on Tuesday just have to use the old card and sort it next month, The problem with the brakes is the discs the pads are fine not even half worn just wearing funny as the discs are below the Min thickness by a few millimetres.

The engine is an aeh engine which has a belt and has to be done every 5 years or 63,000 miles, The car has covered 41,000 miles since it was replaced but its the time interval that's passed being just over 5 years since it has the cambelt done.

Good news is I don't need a water pump as this isnt driven by the cambelt instead the oil pump is driven by the belt, but not sure if these cause the same issues as a water pump failure then throwing the belt off.

DIY the jobs and save some money?

Discs and pads are easy to change if you arent brave enough for a belt change (still not that hard though to be fair)
