what should i do

Featured Replies

hi folks

i'm a lover of skoda vrs's, got my wife a fabia one 4 years ago and love it, it works very well and is so much fun to drive, so when 2 months ago i was at a car dealer with my mother in law and saw a Octavia estate vrs desiel i thought go for it get yourself a car you can have fun in and be practical........... move on two months later and the car is broken, so broken in fact that the dealer wants be replace it( I'm happy about this as it is f***** but i relay fancy this car) so the question is this. i bought a Octavia vrs estate desiel 07 plate with 50000 on it and now the dealer is looking for a similar car, but i can change my mind now and go for a different one, but which one, a petrol, a diesel, an estate, or a hatchback, and I'm not sure what to try for. i do very little miles in the car as its a second car really but i try to be a keen driver so the dealers got £10,000 to play with, what do you lot think, your help is most welcome

If you do little mileage then a petrol, either estate or saloon

Sounds like a petrol might be in order

Having driven both, I would definitely go for the petrol with your mileage.

I used to drive a PD Vrs but my circumstances changed and I ended up doing a lot less miles and a lot more short trips, so I switched to a Petrol one and haven't really looked back.

I guess on 07 plate you'd be looking at a PD engine and the DPF will keep filling up and make a big dent in your fuel economy as it will be doing a lot of active regens.

I have also owned both going from a 07 pd to a 59 Tsi. I still do the same mileage so use far more fuel, but couldn't care less. The petrol is so much better in every department especially when re-mapped (diesel was to and had less torque!). I also suffered the dreaded DPF issue which was my main reason for swapping.

Lighter wallet, much bigger smile :D

If your going for a petrol version then you may get a newer one that if you were getting a direct replacement.

General consesnus is if you are doing less than 15k miles a year then Petrol is better option.

To be honest, if it's going to be low mileage I'd go for the petrol, you'll get a newer car (or lower mileage) for the same money as well as it being the better of the two to drive (and that's coming from the diesel owner...)

I find my new vRS diesel a refreshing change to drive in comparison to my previous 1.8T vRS. I actually prefer the feel of the diesel.

I just got the diesel and love it. But itsfor business and I will do 40k per year.

But for a second car, and to have fun I think the petrol would be the most fun. My summer "fun" car is petrol.

I have changed from a diesel vrs to a petrol tfsi vrs and have not regretted it. I do less than 15k a year and average 35 - 40 mpg when i drive sensibly which is hard with this engine as it is so much fun.

Definitely petrol.

PETROL!! NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT, IT'S CHEAPER FOR A START - - FORGET DIESEL.emoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gif

Oh and the PD diesel engine sounds like a tractor that needs a service :p

As nice as the petrol is, you'll get a worse price and have more difficulty selling on come change time.

If you do a search on petrol vs diesel on here, you'll find the changeover point is nearer 10 to 12K miles rather than 15K.

But if your mileage is under 10K then it really is a no brainer to go for the petrol and you'll have more fun in the process.

Me too. I had the 1.8 T and it drank like an alcoholic. Had a PD and now the CR which is nothing like a tractor (try one those of you who think it is) and since austerity kicked in, my business mileage has dropped off dramatically but I still get good mpg, plenty of grunt and wouldn't have another super unleaded beast again.

Sounds like a petrol could be in order. You'll get a much newer car for your money, hopefully with lower miles and maybe a better spec.

I have a hatchback and the boot is huge, one of the largest in it's class and it's been great for family holidays and hauling big loads. I know you've had the estate but on a day to day basis you won't find the boot space in the hatch any smaller.
