Windows auto update

Featured Replies

Every day my home PC tells me that there are Windows updates to download. If I select shut down and update, it will spend ages downloading and installing the updates but then the next time it starts it still says that there are updates?

If I look at the Advanced option, I am sure that these are the same updates being applied time after time, it's as though the install is failing somehow?

It's XP Pro, SP2 (might be SP3, not sure).

Anyone else had this or heard of how to fix it? It's blooming annoying!

Cheers,

Martin

it sounds like you have an update thats failing over and over. What happens if you click on the shield and install them whilst you watch (ie. before shutting down). You should if you selext manual get a list of updates.

The ones that tend to fail at work seem to be .net related, and for that you need to force remove .net using the MS .net cleanup tool and reinstall it.

as above.

Do you know what the update is. Try manually installing. use custom install mode to see if the same one each day. If it is you can change settings for auto download manual install then you can remove that update by hdiing it.

The updates in question were all .Net security updates. There were no failures when I ran them manually, but they still kept coming back like cockroaches.

I unticked them and selected the "bog off and don't bother me again about these crappy updates" option.

That last bit is just the ticket. I used to get updates for Outlook Express all the time on my old desktop, despite specifically uninstalling it. What you did fixed it... :)
