New Skoda service plan 'poor value for money'

Featured Replies

I'm contemplating taking this offer but not sure if I want to move from variable to fixed servicing. Have to give this some thought as I'm probably only really going to need one service over the next 2 years on the variable schedule which will work out cheaper than this does.

Is it easy enough to get the dealer to move me back onto variable at the end of the 2 years or will they try and charge me to make the change?

Don't know about that but the main conditions concern age of car and mileages. I only do <7000 a year so obviously on fixed annual.

One thing I do know is that any "unused" deal is transferable to next owner if car is sold before the deal is fully utilised.

Currently the whole offer seems to have to be taken up (i.e. started) before the end of this year.

  • MOT's should be no more than £39, again they are listed on Skoda's National Pricing using the link above. Let us know how you get on!

I received a flyer for this deal from my dealer last week as my car is due it's first service around Dec/Jan. I'm considering taking it up but first I want to know how much the two services would cost individually.

I've been told a 1st service (12 months/10,000 miles) is around £130 but have no idea how much the 2nd service costs at 24 months/20,000 miles.

Anyone have a rough idea?

I think its SG you are referring to? Its £120 for 1st service and i believe £180 ( if i remember right) for the second one. Thats on the fixed servicing schedule. Variable servicing is more expensive i was told

I had a flyer through from SG yesterday. Am going to get the deal but wont sign up until just after christmas as i will have a bit more money and as ive only just had the car serviced then the contract will run a bit longer than if i was to sign up right now.

I would ring SG though and ask. Speak with Craig who will be able to give you all the prices

As said before, my first annual service was £124, at a specialist dealer, and his quote for second service was £260 to £270.

BUT apart from the fact this was nearly £100 more than the Skoda Finance deal which I did take up, I then got another £100 in vouchers from Skoda Finance, to spend on spares or accessories or any other Skoda products. Yesterday I spent the first £50 voucher on a complete set of OEM wipers (listed at £46) and some screen wash. So the two actual services will cost me £199.

BTW I thought you had to spend it all by 31/12/2010 but looking more closely at the accompanying letter, you get until 31/12/2011.

Thanks again Rob.

Well, £120 and £180 sounds cheap and makes the deal look not such good value. Sinclair Group don't publish prices on their website for Skoda fixed price servicing (so I'll need to phone and check tomorrow), but they do for their VW franchise, and it's £119 and £229 for 1st and 2nd year service, or £299 for the 2 year service plan, same as the Skoda plan. I would imaging Skoda would be similar for individual pricing?

But you're not taking into account the £100 worth of free goodies - the deal really costs you £199 for two annual services, one of which is the bigger sort?

Yeah, but other than buying £100 of screenwash I have no idea what I'd use them for, and I've only used 1 fill of screenwash in 11 months!

So what could I spend £100 of vouchers on?

Boot mat, touch up paint, steel wheels for winter tyres, wipers, autoglym cleaning stuff...

You can also spend them on Skoda parts, items that may be required on top of the standard servicing costs, discs, pads, cam belt etc. etc.

It's almost guaranteed that in either 2 years or 20,000 miles you are going to have to spend money on consumables!

So, the real cost for two services is £199. Even a basic service (oil and filter) is good for £99 from a franchised dealer. So a basic service and major service for £199? No brainer.

Don't get me wrong - Yes I'll almost certainly go for the deal. But...

The vouchers have to be redeemed within 12 months (by Dec 2011). I'll be having my first year service shortly at 7K miles so wouldn't expect to require any consumables. What consumables might I expect to need within the next year given my car might have done ~15K after 2 years. I wouldn't expect to be changing discs or pads at such low mileage. I doubt I can redeem them against the cost of the oil.

Well, as I said, my first buy was a wiper set - that and ONE screen wash took care of the first £50 voucher!

I'm going to get wheel cleaning gel, more screen wash (it isn't going to go off, is it!) , might get a couple of replacemet wheel nut covers (not sure what they cost) a top-up oil (doesn't use much but must need a drop at some point), and so on....I'm sure through the next 13 months I shall find a good use for at least most of the remaining second £50 freebie......I'm sure not complaining!!

I've spoken with Craig this morning and have signed up for the 2 year servicing plan

Craig gave me an indication of fixed servicing costs as follows:

10K: £100

20K: £180-220

30K: £100

40K: £250-300

He said the biggest savings from such deals come if it covers the 4th service. We agreed I'd go for the current deal now to take advantage of the £100 vouchers on offer and then look to renew again in 2 years to cover the 3rd and 4th service.

Also mentioned, the service plan offer covers a brake fluid change at 2 years whereas the prices above don't (e.g, at 20K) as although Skoda recommends changing the break fluid every 2 years it's not included in the fixed service schedule (a bit like the recommended cam belt change at 4 years isn't included either).

So for £299 I get the 10K and 20K service for around the same price or less than I'd pay individually, £100 of vouchers and a brake fluid change included in the second year and I'm protected against VAT and other price rises next year.

Vouchers can be redeemed against anything with a Skoda part number.

Hopefully this information will prove useful for others deciding whether or not to take up the offer.

I am really confused Progress Skoda don't seem to know how much to charge for the first 2 services. Bedford have quoted me £190 twice on separate call for the first service which sounds expensive and £270 for the next.

Their Letchworth branch have quoted £115 for first and £200 for second on one call and £125 for first and £225 for second on another call. I don't know what to do now, how can you plan your future servicing and the value of the deal when the service cost change every call you make.

I think I will go for the £299 2 year deal just so I know the cost so I don't turn up to collect my car and get an unpleasant surprise when I come to pay. I should have bought a BMW with their fixed servicing deal!!!!

Did they ask (or did you tell them) what oil was to be used? I found I was getting different quotes if I specified fully synthetic or semi synthetic. So far as I can tell that makes the biggest single difference in what they quote you.

I should have bought a BMW with their fixed servicing deal!!!!

Yeah, because buying and running a BMW will be far more cost effective than a Skoda :smirk:

That was tongue in cheek to be honest. I don't see them as value for money except for the servicing deals they sometimes do.

  • 2 weeks later...

See my earlier ramblings above but am taking my car in for its 2nd service this coming weekend - 1st service on fixed schedule. Cost will be approx £260.

Dealer advised against signing up now but to wait until immediately after this service (deal expires end of Dec 2010 I believe) so as to cover my 3rd and 4th services, which will cost more he explained. 4th service is particularly expensive he said. Sounds like a good deal - assuming he's not feeding me a line?

The vouchers will come in handy too for a set of wipers me thinks.

That's correct. The 1st and 3rd services are cheap (oil change only), the 2nd a little more expensive, and the 4th is the most expensive. So on the basis that the 4th is more than the 2nd, you've done the right thing

Good to know, thanks for that Phil_p

Quick question re the voucher. Dealer has explained that the voucher is only available aslong as one signs up end of November - is that true? i thought it was end of December, same as the service deal itself. Would then explain the expiry date of the vouchers to be end of Dec 2011.... Can anyone confirm please?

That was my understanding too, the Service Plan offer of £299 will end on the 31st December 2010.

As long as you sign up before the end of this year you will qualify for the £100 voucher.

You then have 12 months until 31st December 2011 to redeem them.

I've not seen anywhere that the vouchers are only being offered up until the end of this month.

If that's what your dealer says I'd be inclined to believe them. Have you made up your mind? If so just sign up next week before the end of the month

Incidentally, I signed up on the 5th November and still haven't received my voucher. My dealer tells me that they have to register the car on the system which triggers Skoda UK to send out the vouchers. They are going to chase them for me.

I signed up on the 8th Nov and haven't received anything other than a credit card receipt from the dealership. I think they said within a month I'd get my plan pack from Skoda UK including my vouchers.

Anyone received theirs yet? If so, how long did they take?

Got mine a couple of days after I had the service done - have "spent" the first £50 and have another £50 valid till Dec. 2011

(You get them as 2 x £50 cards and you can't get "change", so when you spend, e.g., the first £50's worth you need to work out that you are getting roughly £50's worth of goods !!)

Thanks mate.. The problem is finding the £299 having just spent £400 on service and road tax. Managed a free MOT though, saved me £50ish. If I could wait another month that would help a great deal..

Wouldn't be the first time the dealer has got something wrong so if anyone else can confirm the voucher date, that would be appreciated. Anyone got the dealer letter handy?

I have just received a reply from my local dealer confirming that they will sell me the plan for £299 & the £100 vouchers come from Skoda later. (confirm deal ends 31 Dec 2010).

They avoided confirming the 4th & 5th service/year costs (FYI - car is 4yrs old in Feb, only done 23k & not due it's 4th service until June - as it was on variable when I bought it, but I switched to fixed, as I do low mileage) As tey advised I qualify as long as the car is <4yrs old, < 80k & serviced to manufacturers spec etc etc...

I am seriously considering opting for this plan, as the 4th service sounds like it could be a dear one? The only thing I need to square is whether I'd change the car in the summer...so I can sell it with some warranty left (extended via Skoda to Feb 2012)...My MOT will be due in Feb too...so I guess I should get my money's worth out of the deal...and can transfer the remaining 'service plan' as well as the warranty with the potential car sale. (& >£500 of winter tyres too !)
