Annual Mileage going down down down...

Featured Replies

I have to pose this question really, more to satisfy my curiosity.

At the moment, my 6 month old CR TDI (a la DPF) has nearly 10K on the clock, which obviously means I am looking at 20K per annum. I drive on the M4 every day hence the DPF has never ever been a worry for me. My daily commute is 64 miles.

However.

I am starting a new job in a week or so, and my commute will drop to 10 miles per day, and no motorway whatsoever. I don't even think the engine would be warm within the 5 miles as it would be a level commute (no uphill to work the engine etc)

This would work out that my mileage would go from ~20K to probably 4-5K per annum.

However, I do live 2 minutes from the M4, so taking it for a blast when it needed it would not be a problem at all (and in fact I'm usually visiting my dad on weekends who lives 40 miles away and this means M4 and a clearout)

Would I be better off looking at swapping for the petrol vRS version? There are a couple of used ones similar age and mileage out there....

I f you like your car & are happy with it then id keep it,you should have no problems with that kind of usage.

Personally, I *prefer* diesel - 0-60 I don't really care about... but torque ;)

I have a CR vRS. I work from home now so my annual mileage is about 5000 miles, most of the time this consists of Mrs nipping to the shops, though we do 2000 miles in July every year driving to the Alps and back to watch the Tour de France. So 3000 miles a year for what is essentially pootling about.

No problems at all.

I'm only doing 1.5miles to work & back at present with a run at the weekends now & again.....no probs. either. I don't think the CR gives any aggro. with the DPF? :)

Bought in Dec last year and has a very very low mileage for me of 7400. No issues so far! (well apart from a warrenty job on the rear bumper paint).

Oh yes, another question I forgot to ask - how about servicing?

Out of the factory the vRS has variable servicing which was great for me with 20K+ annual mileage.

Now we're going to be looking at 5-6K per annum, is it worth switching back to fixed/1yr or leave it on variable and let the car decide?

I'm hoping to keep the car for a number of years (provided nothing nasty happens post warranty of course...)

Yes, good point re low mileage and variable service. If you expect to do <6k miles pa from new, when will the first service show - after first MOT?

Pretty sure it's a maximum of 2 years for the variable services

Thanks. All my previous cars (none VAG) required frequent service because of low mileage, usually 6k miles or 6 months. Apparently low miles could cause problems for brakes and engine.

2 years or up to 20,000 depending on how you drive it...

Tempted to take it back in May for first service and switch it to fixed/10k/1yr tbh.

With my last vRS (PD) I serviced it once in the time I owned it (over 3 years and 23,000 miles), handed back to dealer, got 56% back and bought a new one. They didn't bat an eyelid.

Now my annual mileage is even lower, I'll be doing the same, one service after say 20 months, hand it in on 36 months.

I was considering this option too.

Would look at about 9.5-10K trade in, find the other 7K then buy a new car again.

Tempting.

with mine due to the low mileage I'm switching to every year/10k miles but that is my own choice.

25K on mine not yet two years old and no sign of any dpf problems. I was going to sell coming up to month 36 but with the situation at work, this one may be for keeps. I've driven it from here in Lancs to Knock Hill in Scotland a few times and it's one of those cars that can just go on and on. Comfy, plenty of power and decent handling.

If I take it easy to work in my petrol vRS then on a cold day after 10 miles the oil temperature is just coming up to 90 degrees.
