engine cover rattle

Featured Replies

noticed of late that the engine at idle was rattly - more so than I remembered. Had to jump start the wife's mini today and with the bonnet up I realised there was one hell of a din coming from the engine cover. A bit of fiddling around and it was clearly coming from the actual Skoda badge rattling away on the cover itself.

I remember reading about this on a thread ages ago, but can't find it now. - So the question is, what do you suggest using to stop the badge rattling? I was considering bathroom silicon sealant, but not sure how this will react to the temperature it will be subject to.

cheers

Silicone rubber sealer will withstand temperatures of over 220 deg C and so is safe for this job. Ordinary oil based sealers will not be suitable.

Note that silicone rubber is attacked and softened by diesel fuel - but I'm sure your engine doesn't leak.

rotodiesel.

Or prise it off and suoperglue it, I never had this myself, but I can imagine it annoys.

Found mine is doing this too.

Any one found a good solution?

Sorted it. Seems like the main culprit is the badge, which is itself (loosley) mounted to another plastic plate and then to the engine cover. None of these have any kind of rattle prevention built in, which is a little poor.

Used various plastic pry tools and a lot of cursing to remove the badge plate - managed to get it out without damage though. Then the badge pops out from the badge plate by squeezing the pins which hold it to the plate and pushing firmly. Used some double sided 3M VHB foam I had from an old work project to take up the space between the badge and the badge plate. Also put a couple of pieces of foam on the top of the engine cover under where the badge plate goes to help stop that rattling.

ive noticed that with my rattle its coming from the engine cover itself.

In my case was definitely the badge - applying the lightest pressure to the badge while idling stopped the rattle.

Noticed one of the covers for the screws in the cover is missing - oh well, need to see if I can get one somewhere.
