Noise on startup/when air con switched on from cold

Featured Replies

Hi There

I have noticed that if i start my 2004 vrs up (from cold) and then switch the aircon on, i get a couple of seconds of squeal from under the bonnet.

From what i have read this could be the clutch in the air con compressor or a possible problem with the aux belt.

I have looked under the bonnet, and from what i can see all looks ok with the belt, but i saw that the tensioner has a slight wobble that i have never noticed before.

Should it move or could this be the problem?

How expensive is it to change the tensioner/belt.

It has done 62000 with a full skoda service history (cam belt changed at 38k, when i bought it) so i assume the aux belt should have also been changed

any advice welcome

cheers

Mark

That'll be the aux belt and tensioner, loads seem to do it. Mine does it for a few minutes generally until the car is measuring heat.. particularly on cold days, think the belt shrinks due to contraction so has to stretch more hence the squeeking.. new belt and tensioner should see it right.. but thats only if it bothers you that much

Mine did it occasionally even after the belt and tensioner were changed. Just one of those things I suppose, and probably nothing to worry about.
