Clunk on startup

Featured Replies

Ive just noticed when i start my fabia vRS up, occasionaly it will give a low clunk clunk noise, sort of like the exhaust banging on the bulkhead or similar. its not an engine noise thats for sure. From bitter experience with My Mk1 golf GTi i have found this to be worn engine mounts, surley not on an 11k fabia??

Any ideas?

not unheard of for them not to be tightended properly,i have heard of a leon tdi recently letting go of one, bolt was not too tigh and it sheered off

It's quite normal! It's the lift pump priming the fuel system. Sounds like a clunk then squirt.

Mines' s done it from day one.

Thats more of a click, this is a clunk like someons taking a half pound ball hammer to the bulkhead, and only just started recently.

Its hard to describe, but if you can imagine sitting in a vauxhall nova in third gear and lifting the clutch, that rattly clunky vibration noise you get just as the car stalls when the engine and gearbox are having a wee argument.

For sure it sounds like the downpipe is coming into contact with something on initial startup, before it settles down into its regular rev pattern when no sounds are obvious.

i have however noticed that upon SWMBO stalling the car this morning i heard the clunk too tho ?? confusing.

Ill have a look over the weekend, if i cant see anything obvious then ill pass it on to Skoda. Thats not bad though, almost a year to the day and ive never had to go back to the dealer under warranty once.

My Octy TDI does the same thing (19k miles). Only noticed it properly this morning when i started the car with the driver's door open. I turned the car off and restarted it to see if it was the starter motor, but alas it didn't do it the second time.

I would be very interested if its the same thing. Keep us posted.

Ah, it's not the usual noise then!

I'm awaiting some new gear selection cables to solve the gear lever rattle. But there is another noise which sounds a little less "violent" than yours. It happens when the engine is rocked back on it's mounts i.e shifting up a gear or on & off "throttle" actions.

The dealer has checked numerous things out but a waiting until they fit the selection cables for a more detailed investigation.

This might be the same thing, then again it might not!!!

a bit worrying its turned into a slight groaning vibration when pulling off slowly in first and changing into second :o

If it only happens when you first start off and only happens the once each time, than it should just be the ABS self testing.

I know that clunk too, its like a spring clunk sound, its not that. i had a thought, i drove through quite a long deep puddle the other day so im gonna check none of my exhaust rubbers have came off, because it seems to have taken the heatsheild off the backbox too.

Thatll be saturdays job then ;)

Sounds like your talking about MY Fabia vrs! exactly the same noise, same clunk when accelerating/decellarating in the lower gears, though the clunk then sounds like its coming from the area of the heat shield, mines only done 6.5k,due for its 1st annual service in a month and will point the "clunk" out to the dealer then.

Well, after all that i got under my furby and had a look. the big puddle i had went through had bent the heatsheild between the downpipe and the chassis of the car. a slight adjustment later and clunk gone.

Thanks for the input
