Tyres for the cold and wet - not deep snow

Featured Replies

Hi

Has anybody experience of the Michelin Alpin 4 205/55R16 91H (or similar) on a 2WD Yeti?

I'm aware that there are plenty of winter tyres that are good in snow, but stopping quickly on slippery cold wet roads are more my problem.

If Michelin are to be believed this tyre is aimed at these conditions.

They also appear to be a bit cheaper than full-on snow tyres from Continental, Dunlop and Goodyear.

Your observations please.

Thanks

Fred

Fred - I know its not exaclty what you asked for but friends run these Alpin 4's on their BMW (rwd 3 series) in Germany and I was very impressed with them. The owner of the car rates them highly (he knows his stuff regarding cars. tyres etc) and in freezing conditions on the way to the Swiss Alps (so slippery cold roads, not actually snow covered roads) they certainly gripped very well in the corners ;) I was following in the Yeti on my winters and neither of us had an issue with grip, even when driven 'spiritedly' :smirk:

I reckon your thinking is spot on actually. I think my tyres would only offer further advantages in very bad conditions; ones we rarely see over here.

ADAC rates them highly and I completely agree with your emphasis on cold and wet.

They will do very well in snow too.

Not a winter tyre but I have seen these Michelins My link fitted to a French forum Yeti (replaced OEM tyres on delivery I understand). Only available in 215/60 R16 Yeti size.

Being a dedicated 4x4 tyre I'm curious to how well it would perform throughout the year emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

Winter tyres give enhanced grip in all cold weather conditions. I am very pleased with the ride quality and lack of noise from the Continental WinterContact TS830's, in fact my initial reaction is that they are nicer to drive on than the Goodyear's that came with the car. As my car is S spec the winter steels and summer alloys are the same size and spec, the Goodyear tyres are wider and deeper. I haven't researched 'summer' tyres but I'm fairly convinced the Michelin tyres I had on my last car were superior to the default Yeti Goodyear's I now have.

Just checked out Costco for the Alpins but the 17"ers are on back order and won't be available this year. Price was approx £200 each less the current 20% discount offer if 4 tyres bought. Other local suppliers also struggling with availability for other brands.

Hi

Been following up on the Michelins:

ADAC test results seem good.

Just got a quote of just over £100 per tyre for the Michelin Alpin 4 205/55R16 91H including fitting, valve, balancing and VAT which compares reasonably well with buying on line and fitting locally (Britannia Tyres, Bristol). As always there is a perceived advantage in using a local supplier. Availability seems to be good from wholesaler. They did say don't wait for the snow to fall before ordering however!

Fred

That's quite a good price.

Mytyres.co.uk are quoting £90 delivered each but you then have hassle and expense of getting them fitted - probably about £10 -15 per wheel.

I had the Alpin A3 in T index for my previous Peu 307. They were very good in snow, confortable, not noisy and without vibrations. I remember the grip on wet was not so good, but the lack of grip was quite gradual so you could -hopefully- recover.

Summing up I was happy with them and I tried to order Alpin A4 in september and they said it was too early. Ordered in mid october, and now they say Alpin A4 are not available at the moment, so I will have to choose between Pirelli and Goodyear.

I also ordered 16 inch alloy wheels (Enzo W, 7 arms) to match with 205/55R16 91H. Now I have Conti 225/50R17.

The price for wheels+A4 tires is 1000 Euro.

Ratz

I have just found this You tube video on the octavia 2 forum.

I had wondered about only using 2 winter tyres on the front of my car. I'm not even thinking that way now....

Am I misunderstanding something here? How can the 225/50R17 grow in size and then under estimate the speed. Surely it is the other way round? Indicated 70 will be real terms less than 70. I'm not doing the calculations, but the tyre is smaller when worn, so will go same way as 205/55R16.

The Plumber uses 205/55R16. I will be using 215/60 R16 which is also an approved Skoda Tyre size, but it will over read do when new an indicated 60 will be slightly over 60 and when worn will come down to 60 ish.

Hi Mike

I'll check the figures later when I've got time - not suggesting a tyre will grow when worn. Or it might be a typo. emoticon-0120-doh.gif

But the real point was whether the speedometer accuracy would meet C&U requirements with a worn 205/55/R16 on a car calibrated for 225/50/R17. Just went a long way about trying to illustrate the point. (Too much time waiting for a Yeti and worrying about tyres.)

Hi Fred,

don't think this is an issue at all to worry about; as long as you follow manufactures instructions then you will be OK. Winter tyres should be replaced at 4mm anyway, below that there performance drops off. The Nokians have wear bars at the min legal 1.6mm and recommended 4mm for winter use.

Appreciate the wait is a long and frustrating one; on my third and potentially longest wait for a Yeti and then there was the wife's Fabia. Might be worth taking up golf, watching repeats of Columbo or something of the like to while away the time

I did some calculations on this some time ago and came up with a 1% difference in rolling radius between a new tyre and one worn by 6mm?

Hi Mike

The post you are refering to has been deleted. Not only did I hijack my own thread but I screwed up the transfer of the figures to the post. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

This speedometer reading issue has in any case been covered by "The Plumber" (I should have guessed) - I missed that thread when I was looking for it.

As I understand it the speedometer can read higher than your actual speed but must not read lower.

Since T.P. has covered this there is no point in correcting mine.
