Whereabouts are you? There is a list of VCDS owners in the VCDS/VAGCOM forum who will do you a scan either for free or certainly for a fraction of the £40+ that garages usually charge.

Of course, you may not get any actual diagnostic assistance other than a printout, but that may be all you need.

TBH you don't often get any real assistance at dealers. They just replace whole expensive parts at your expense and pray it fixes the problem.

Unfortunately there is a bit of truth in that statement, but in all fairness, given the charged dealers hourly rate, with a bit of experience, plus training, plus the VAG dealer diagnostic, a reasonable success rate should normally be the outcome. What I object to is getting no more than a fitter changing what might fix the problem, that is customer abuse to say the least.
