Pirelli P Zeros

Featured Replies

A word of caution for those who are considering fitting Pirelli P Zero Rosso tyres, which are one of the standard fit Yeti tyres. I have fitted a new pair to the rear in September after 13.5 k miles, as the front ones were knackered, and I moved backs to fronts.

I had originally hoped to get through the winter by changing on to the set of Wintracs I bought in summer, but temperatures have been rather too high. Hence the new Pirellis to hold the fort till now, and then perhaps replace the other two in May, or thereabouts. I only got round to changing over to the Wintracs this morning. (The temperature in this neck of the woods being 8 degrees by then).

On checking out the Pirellis, I discovered that the sipes on the original two which are now on the front, which shift water on the middle third of the tyre had completely scrubbed off , because these only go down 4 mm, rather than the full depth of the tread. There is still a good 3.5 mm left, but without the water shifting ability.

Methinks that a closer look at another brand might be in order after the winter!

Smick

Many tyre designs have sipes that disappear way before the tyre reaches the min wear depth. It's the actual tread depth or lack of that should be the biggest concern, as tyres become much less effective below 3mm. Believe quite a number German drivers tend to change their tyres around this point.

Being a bit of a skinflint 2-2.5mm myself.

TP

I had P Zeros on the XF and P Zero Neros on the X-Type before that. Both suffered from tramlining in the dry and felt unstable in standing water, plus rapid wear. I replaced them with Dunlop SP Sport 01s (as fitted to our Yeti) on the XF and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s on the X-Type - both of which were a great improvement, especially the (expensive) Michelins. Still can't decide whether to stick to the SP Sport 01s or try the Nokian eNTYRE when we replace the Yeti tyres in a month or so (at about 16,000m).
