VAG Diesel BOV/Dump valve.....

Featured Replies

I'm almost embarrassed at asking..... and I'm actually 34 and not 17, but for some reason I feel compelled to ask if anyone has an interest..... or has one of these fitted, think I saw something on Forge Motorsport, but my pc is having some trouble with the .pdf file, and I can't find the price or correct page for this on their site

Is this a pointless piece of equipment ?

I just always liked the idea of trying one, and figured it would be kinda funky on a diesel...... if it sounded ok

Pointless , most people either replace then with one that makes a noise<chavvy> or for more reliability, IE early M2 Octavia s can split the diaphragm especially if it has been remapped . You have the wrong car for modding

On a petrol yeah, but a diesel doesn't require one and the Forge kit I think has stopped production.

I sold a 340bhp Mitsubishi Evo8 to buy the Skoda, perhaps I should have kept it ?

It is common for newbies to ask about them, this is I normally say about dump valves for TDIs

The way that diesels work, a dump valve will not do anything at all if you fit one. This is because a diesel does not have a throttle valve and does not restrict the airflow into the engine, unlike a petrol one. There is a good explanation here: TDIClub FAQ - Blow-off valves or BOV or similar The rest of the FAQ is very useful as well.

You can fit an electronic operated dump valve, this will produce the sound of one but will not do anything to the performance of the car. I have even heard they actually decrease performance slightly when gear changing, and could damage the turbo, as it dumps more pressure than it needs to. This is what an electronic one will sound like:

That's a great explanation, thanks very much for that, I understand now

Cheers

Good post Jim
