Mytyres do a package deal

or you could keep an eye on a set of alloys, just got a set of 4 in near perfect condition for 70 quid on ebay as there is plently on there.

Thinking of getting x4 R16 steelies and some winter tyres. These seem a VERY good deal from Kwikfit...

More information on Winter Tyres

Every type of tyre is rated for the maximum amount of speed and weight it should carry. Typically winter tyres have a lower speed rating than the summer tyre for your vehicle. Due to the superior grip from winter tyres it is strongly recommended that all four tyres are replaced at the same time. The vehicle may skid or have less control if only one axle pair is fitted. If you require fewer than 4 please contact Customer Services on 0845 875 1111.

Book & Pay Online £81.65 each!!!!!!!!

I noticed they are H speed rated, but from what I have been reading it appears to be ok to fit lower speed rated tyres (than your normal summer variant) for winter (as long as the load rating is sufficient) - Reg 25 - The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986).

From Kwik Fit site - Every type of tyre is rated for the maximum amount of speed and weight it should carry. Typically winter tyres have a lower speed rating than the summer tyre for your vehicle. Due to the superior grip from winter tyres it is strongly recommended that all four tyres are replaced at the same time. The vehicle may skid or have less control if only one axle pair is fitted.

REGULATION 25: This regulation is concerned with tyres load index and the speed rating. The regulation requires that the tyres fitted to the vehicle are not only capable of supporting the maximum permitted load on each axle but of doing so at the vehicles maximum legal speed. In defining 'load-capacity index' and 'speed category' the Regulation makes reference to UN ECE Regulations 30 and 54 and to the European Union Directive 92/23/EEC

Additionally, an H (130mph) rating is still above the top speed of my car, although am still going to ring Direct Line to check before I go ahead and will post their reply.

Just got off the phone to Direct Line, they seemed ok with it but I'd want something in writing I think...

regarding speed ratings there was a bit about this in auto express. The general view is that it is fine but its worth contacting your insurance company just to cover yourself.

As for the choice of tyre, that came in second best in the 2010 auto bild winter tyre tests. And that is not a bad price at all

Thanks for the info. For anyone looking at 15"/16"s, there's a good rolling radius calc here - http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator.htm

If you reduce to 195/65/15's (same rolling radius, within the tolerances) the Kwikfit Contis are even cheaper at £64.40/tyre!!

The legal requirements appear to be covered in The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, Regulation 25 "Tyre loads and speed ratings", paragraph (6) and Table 2.

In summary, and according to my understanding, tyres on cars must be capable of supporting the maximum permitted axle weight of the vehicle at 70 mph.

Since all tyre speed ratings in the UK are for greater than 70 mph then the essence of this is that providing the load index meets the minimum requirements for the specific car, any tyre speed rating is OK.

More generally, the car must not be driven faster than the lowest speed rating of any of the tyres.

Yup, it's not particularly well written is it, but that's also what I surmised - load rating needs to be correct, speed rating can be a variety of options (as per the manual - especially as many winter tyres have a lower rating in comparison to their summer counterparts) but you must not exceed the speed for the tyres (I know it can be set on my Maxidot) but as H rated tyres are ok to 130mph (in the snow?!?!) and my 1.6's top speed is 123 mph I'm ok regardless :smirk:

Feck £60 a wheel? i bought 4 second hand same size as those for €20 for the 4   and just ordered 4 205/55/16 Michelin Alpin A4's for them at the weekend off mytyres (well the irish version of their site)

£60/wheel is cheap compared to my other car... £500 for a pair... :'(
