winter tyre puzzle

Featured Replies

Hi to everyone,

shortly to recieve delivery of my new Yeti 4x4 140 TDI and was thinking seriously about getting winter tyres specificaly Nokian WRG2's fitted. My question is this. The Nokian tyres are classed as an assymetrical inside/outside design and not directional, and as such should obviously be put on the car with the outside side of the tyre facing out the way (Following me???),however this causes a problem in as much as Nokian do not specificaly make the tyres in right or left tread configuration (basicaly they make one tyre and you fit it correctly in relation to the inside/outside markings) so you have the difference in which way the arrow type tread pattern faces depending on what side of the car you view from ( pointing forward on one side and pointing to the rear on the opposite side of the car).Has anyone used this tyre and am i correct in assuming this or not. Also if this is the case then does it affect the handling of the vehicle at all as it seems odd to me???.

Any help/advice greatfully appreciated.

P.S Not sure if this was the right place to start topic so apologies if not.

Hi and welcome to the SMOC,

ran my Monster on the G2's last winter; as long as the tyres face with the outside to outside there correct. No need to be concerned regard the tread blocks appearing to face the wrong way.

A good winter tyre only minor negative being tyre noise on poor surfaced stone chipped roads.

TP

Mine are quieter....much quieter!!!

If the tyres are unidirectional they will be marked with arrows showing direction of rotation on both sides. This was the case with my Conti Wintercontacts 830's. I actually prefer the handling, ride characteristics of these tyres over the Goodyear's it came with, even though the Conti's have slightly lower and narrower profile than the Goodyear Excellence. It would be very interesting to be able to test drive different tyres, I was surprised at the difference and was not expecting the winter tyres to feel better on the car. Maybe some snow next week :D

Each of the tyres will have arrows on both sides!!! So even though you will only see them on one side of the car the tread pattern will face in exactly the correct way on either side.

I find them very quiet too, maybe as much as 1cm lower volume bar on the radio to hear it just as clearly. What is the recommended tyre pressure for the WRG2s on an unloaded Octavia?

I just checked by the way and my WRG2 have the outside marked on them and are fitted that way. Didnt see a directional arrow? Are there two types of this tyre?

Look in your handbook and Skoda recommend 0.2Bar HIGHER than your normal (all season tyres) pressures.

My WRG2's are just like yours - no arrows just 'outside' on them, they are not directional as the inside tread has a different pattern from the outside.

Many thanks for the quick replies. My original question was specificaly that when you have these tyres fitted to your vehicle then it would appear that the INNER tyre pattern faces in a different direction with regards to whether the tyre is fitted on the left or right hand side of the car.I believe there is no tyre direction arrow on the sidewall of the tyres as such only a marking for inside/outside as initialy stated.I just wanted to know if there were any poor handling effects that were noticeble because of this or if it wasnt a problem.

Again many thanks to those who have replied.

Sorry you are wrong. The Conti WinterContacts I had delivered on steel wheels were all mounted in the same orientation meaning the direction of rotation was only showing as correct on the offside of the car, they had to be flipped and refitted for the nearside - so the arrows on the sidewalls then showed the correct direction of rotation. If you don't know what a unidirectional tyre is try reading page 220 of the owner's manual.

My mentioning Unidirectional tyres seems to have caused confusion, the original post was about direction of tread on the Nokians, which is why I mentioned it. If the tyres can be used on either side of the car in the same orientation then there will be no direction of rotation arrows on them.

Just yesterday I had Pirelli Sottozero 205/55/R16 mounted in place of the summer 225/50/17. It is early to give an opinion, but the steering is lighter and the noise less.

What it is sure is that being the wheels 1 inch less in height the car lowered 1/2 inch and the gearing was slightly changed (the same speed that in summer tires I had at 4000 rpm is now at 4200...),

Ratz
