Turbo Failure?

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have a Y Reg Octavia and wait for it has done 469000 miles and is still running ok apart from the turbo does not seem to work, Do you think that with the milage the turbo is shot and I need a new one or could it just be dirty and needing removed and cleaned?

Cheers

It could well just be needing cleaned. Since you're in Glasgow, look up "A for Audi" in Yellow Pages (display advert, no classified listing in my Mum's copy).

I will speak to my uncle to see if he has time to have a look, he is a mechanic so I will get him to put the car up on the ramp to see what damage there is, it would be great if it was just needing cleaned.

Probably just sticky vanes. Get underneath the car, pull off the vacuum hose (either off the turbo, or from the control valve under the bonnet) and see how much movement you can get on the control arm.

If there is very little movement then the thing will be sooted/rusted up. I cleaned mine up a a little over a week ago and it made a world of difference. Was going to try and write a guide when I get some time.

I will let you in to a secret, the car was my uncles taxi, so you can see why so many taxi drivers have a Octavia diesel.

indeed, its like the taxis abroad. i remember getting into a merc and saw it had roughly the same milage and it still fealt prety solid.

Not had a chance to remove to clean the vanes but was out last night to give the engine a rip at high revs and it seems to have slightly eased the engine off but the turbo is not whistling yet. Once it is cleaned hopefully it will work.

That pretty much confirms that it's the VV mechanism or vanes.
