Fao All The 50+mpg Drivers

Featured Replies

stick with paper filter and change it every 10,000

I do 8 miles each way to work and back and trip says between 52 and 56 mpg (depending how cleanly I get through traffic) average.

Best I've managed was 72.6 on a 20 mile A road run (bad weather so was 50 - 55 mph most of time)

I use 6th a lot though and unless it's on a significant incline I'm in 6th at 50. Car doesn't seem to complain at all :)

I've never been too worried about mpg but since getting my vrs I like to play games seeing if I can beat my average on the trip computer. The dash would hardly read below 48 on an easy week too and from work and some driving in-between, would mostly sit around 49-50 but since I got it back from a service I can't seem to keep it much above 47.5ish with no change to my driving style. It only use to go down that way after a good blast. I'm on my second tank so will see how many miles I get from it, but anything that could have caused this?

Probably the cold weather, mine drops at least 5mpg when the outside temps drop. Up until a couple weeks ago I used to average about 54mpg commuting Sheffield to London but now I get 48/49 mpg (according to trip computer).

i would expect better mpg in colder weather as the air is cooler.

Think my turbo is now fudged so i have like 1/2 the MPG!

Bad times.

checked my service history today, and from what ive read, all the cars ever had service wise is an oil change :( which means that no filters have EVER been changed. this is over like 6 services from 10,000 odds upto 65000, thats bad chat. better get it fully done soon, makes you wonder why though.

that isn't good, who has it had its services done by?

sounds like whoever had it before you has just had the cheaper interim service rarther than the full more expensive service possibly?

... and he hasn't mentioned "cambelt" either...

i know the cambelt and water pump were done, pretty sure i have a reciept for them, 2 mins al look out the service book and post up what i can see

aside from the book i have a service reciept i just found dated 21/08/10 and oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, brake disks and pads and also oil was changed. wonter why the book dated and stamped for this date only says oil change.

also while typing and looking found another couple of sevice recipts with more than just an oil change, maybe ive read the service book wrong, aha my bad.

might just give it a service anyways as my bro will get the parts from his work and service it for nothing, just need to pay like £30-40 for parts. and because he works for VW i get discount :D :D

I tend to change upto 6th gear when at 65mph but sometimes i hold it in 4th and 5th longer...all the way upto 4000rpm to help clear out any crap. I do a 240 mile trip every weekend mostly motorway and usually at speeds of 90-120mph and the computer reads anything between 49-51mpg. If i take it easy and do 70-80 then i nearly always get between 55-62mpg. From a full tank i get anything between 450-500 miles. I mainly use the super diesel as opposed to the cheaper one and i give it a shot of forte every so often but always put the forte in first then fill up with fuel so that it mixes better.

from what i know and experienced colder weather would worsen your mpg because when it is cold, engine takes longer to warm up and more energy is needed. Tyre pressures can also drop when its cold and this effects rolling resistance. A car's engine oil, gear oil, etc will be very cold and therefore will take longer to move from one place to another so this again means more energy to move and warm it up.

I did a few tests, and my trip comp is way out.

Actual average MPG over mixed driving was 45-50, indicated average MPG 60-65.

Another thing I noticed is that the distance-to-empty ready was off but got gradually more accurate, it started off saying I could do 600 miles but I only managed to do 450 miles with it saying 10 or so left to go. I was able to do about 300 miles on the first half of a tank, but the second half only managed 150 miles.

i would expect better mpg in colder weather as the air is cooler.

On a cool summer morning when the air is a bit damp and dense, yes. When the temprature is down around freezing, it takes the TDI engine so long to come up to working temprature that you'll almost certainly see worse mpg.

:( This morning, the car was saying it was -4.5 degrees. Even travelling quite slowly (don't think I got over 60mph), at the end of my 10 mile commute, the tripmeter was only reading 48mpg (my trip meter is pretty accurate....).

:) Its been 10 years since I came back to the UK. Last winter, for the first time ever, I came to the conclusion that maybe the Brisbane summer wasn't as bad as I remember it. Looks like I'm going to be feeling the same again soon.

Paul.

The nippy weather isn't helping.

Wonder how owners of that new munter of a vRS are fairing though ey? :giggle:

It's no good - we need a 4WD VRS! :)
