Fao All The 50+mpg Drivers

Featured Replies

You must bloody drive slow. Ive drove at 70 today for 100 miles and couldnt get over 43mpg average. Is there something up? All my filters have been changes.

I took my mrs home down the m42/m6 last nite set the cruise at bang on 70mph in 6th by the time I got home (50 miles round trip) dash said 66.2mpg and even on my day to day driving lessons it says 50 minimum :)

Ide be exptecting 60+ if i did 100 miles at 70!

Agreed, i do around 60 miles a day on motorways and stick dead on 70mph. I get 59mpg from that.

Overall I usually average 45mpg or so as I do a lot or urban driving, but yesterday we drove over to Sheffield from Warrington over Woodhead and I averaged 60.1mpg - I was impressed! Although thats going off the computer not manually calculated.

hmmm my vrs is rubbish then too, only ever got over 50mpg 2-3 times on long runs best i seem to get is 40-43 :(

Do you have heating/ stereo on? This can affect it.

Also what tyre pressures are you running?

I calculated mine manually and the computer really isn't that far out, day to day my trip computer says 50-53 that's with spending hours doing daft things like reversing round corners etc! Plus I always have my top box/sign on the roof which can't help mpg I worked out the last tank I got 51mpg :)

I just can't stay at 70 unless I engage the cruise.

Too much temptation. I get a displayed 45-48 on a run

That said, for me 70 is a fifth gear speed.

Don't engage 6th until I'm 80+.

Interesting - so not all the later cars have wildly inaccurate mpg readings then - mine's over 20% out!

34 psi front and 32 rears

No I mean when I first got the car I thought no way can that be correct because I was goin from a 1.6 16v common rail fiesta (smaller lighter car) which used to average 53 day in day out... But no it does do regularly 50-53 on paper iv sat and worked it out! I always make sure tyres are inflated properly, and I'm getting some door signs made up to get rid of the roof sign as a collegue of mine worked out his was costing him 6mpg!

Engage top gear for motorway speed -> Use less diesel.

If you're after a spirited drive you can't expect to save fuel at the same time!

vRS is absolutely FINE at 70mph in 6th gear. Leaving it in 5th will use loads more fuel! :D Also engine noise too? 70mph is about 2300rpm in 6th but probably about 2700 in 5th?

drove my fiesta 1.4 zetec diesel 70 miles to pick up my vRS. drove at around 70mph all the way and got 63mpg. That car was gutless and paid £30 per year road fund license.

Drove the vRS back, booted it off most roundabouts (as you do when you get a new toy) and got 63mpg!

Often pull onto my drive slowing down from 60 6th gear straight into first.

As they showed on topgear with the M3 / Prius test, it's how you drive that saves the most fuel.

haha lol get in 6th at 55-60

I know it's not the most economical way to drive.

I'm just terrified of the engine labouring when the cruise is on.

I'm already £600 lighter in the pocket thanks to replacing the flywheel and clutch

in the summer. It's still a good bit more economical than my 2.0 Bora was and

that'll do for me.

Trust me, engine will not labour above 2000rpm at all. Turbo will come in fine at those kind of revs should acceleration be needed, not that it rarely does. I have cruise on at 70 in sixth and if I have to slow down to 55/60 I will happily use the resume button in 6th to let it get back up to 70 (so 2000rpm to 2300rpm say) - and that is with a laggy turbo too. :D

Just use fuelly its easy all you do is put how many miles you did from when you last filled up and put how much fuel you put in. simples

My VRS is a 53 plate so has the longer gearbox. 70 is about 1800rpm in 6th.

I do about 80 miles a day, motorway and dual carriageway into london, Average speed is about 60 in the mornings and 30 (stop start for half the journey) and I average just over 50 throughout the week.

At the weekend I did a 150 mile blast and averaged (cough) 85 ish and that gave about 42mpg. Can't grumble at that.

I've never been too worried about mpg but since getting my vrs I like to play games seeing if I can beat my average on the trip computer. The dash would hardly read below 48 on an easy week too and from work and some driving in-between, would mostly sit around 49-50 but since I got it back from a service I can't seem to keep it much above 47.5ish with no change to my driving style. It only use to go down that way after a good blast. I'm on my second tank so will see how many miles I get from it, but anything that could have caused this?

Before I avg 55 now its more 45.. possibly because of weather and oil change..

Anyway, when I try really hard to get high mpg its around high 40's or low 50s in town, 60+ a-roads and 50-60 motorway.

I dont measure mpg by full tanks as I never run full tanks, nor will I keep the same eco pace for a whole full tank :D The car tells me it needs an italian tune up at least once a week..

Agree with the above.

The little light that flashes with an italian flag... for some reason the throttle goes really light. Is annoying because its too easy to push down.

;)

I averaged 68mph over 230 miles last night. I'll post a video up in a bit. :giggle:

anyone running an aftermarket panel filter? maybe green cotton or k&n do you rate these better than a standard paper filter?
