VRS v Leon FR

Featured Replies

whats all this ko4 ko3 business ?

Anyway thanks for your help - I think I knew which one I really wanted...

Has too be the VRS...

They are two different size turbo's, the 2.0 tfsi engine is basically the same across the VAG range, (with a few upgrades on different applications e.g injectors, intercoolers etc) however the KO3 is the smaller turbo which is used in the vRS, FR, Golf Gti and various other Audi's, the KO4 is fitted to the Cupra, Golf Gti Edition 30 and Audi S3, basic figures are 200 bhp from the KO3 and between 230 - 265 bhp from the KO4 with the latter being tunable to 350+ bhp.......... :o

By the way, wise choice.

Had a 1.8 VRS and we had a Leon Cupra too, both had the 180 hp petrol engine.

Differences:

Cupra felt more sporty. Harder suspension, too hard even on just the 17 inch rims.

Cupra had 6 speed box where as VRS had 5 speed box but oddly VRS was more economical ie average about 36 mpg whereas the Cupra average 33 mpg.

Both were group 17 in the old insurance groups but one insurance company did not want to insure me with one TS30.

Octavia VRS has higher top speed ie 146 against 142 mph and the reason is partly the VRS is a more aerodynamic shape.

SEATs are on 10K fixed servicing, a complete pain compared to the VRS on variable ie about 18K miles betweeen services.

VRS has much bigger boot but more weight over rear axle and therefore Cupra was a couple of tenths quicker through standing quarter.

VRS much more practical car to own but Leon is the car VAG chose for WTCC, do not think Octavia would have done quite as well if they had raced Octavias.

Loved the both but Octavia better car to own.

as timmy said, cupra Vs vRS itd be the cupra all day long.

FR Vs vRS its the octavia easy

if there was a k04 vRS that would be perfect

I'm not Timmy! :giggle:

The answer's simple really - we're (whilst staying objective) going to go for the Octy..those on other forums are going to go for their choice. So it doesn't matter which forum you ask on as all answers will be the same. I'd still have the RS3 though...but one with wheels on not that like that one in the pic

I don't care if it's got a Bugatti engine under the bonnet if my spinal discs are popping out like frisbees

that is true, thought timmyboy had wrote that , that'll teach me for not rechecking lol

Currently i have mk1 leon cupra (almost finished my mk2 octavia vrs estate) and the missus has a (57 plate) mk2 leon fr tdi.

The comments about the harsh ride are totally true and worse on the diesel due to the heavier engine. Its almost unbearable honestly!!

They upgraded the suspension when they face lifted the car and that improve the ride alot so if you can stretch to it and really want the leon then either budget a suspension change on an earlier model or go for the facelift. Quite a few people on the cupra forum have fitted eibach springs on the standard dampers and the ride is massively improved (approx £130 plus fitting if you cant do it yourself).

Other than that it depends what you want from the car really and if your buying petrol then go for the cupra or K1 (same as a cupra but with BTCC bodykit) rather than the FR. 240 bhp standard and easily remapped over 300 bhp due to the k04 turbo.

If you want the space then go for the skoda, but have to be honest the spec on the leon for the money is excellent and so not much in it with the skoda. I really like the look of both cars for different reasons and so its mainly a matter of choice as to which u want.

Both great cars and much better spec'd than the golf or a3 equivelents.

 You just didn't expect me to know what I was talking about................ B)

Just to add the proverbial spanner in the works, have you considered a mkV Golf Gti or Gt Tdi?

yes but you cant get much of a gti for 9-10k unless its got high miles...

not a fan of the golf tbh, plus you pay a huge surcharge for the badge

Please can you tell swmbo that? I have being trying my hardest to talk her out of it, but she has always wanted a Golf, my suggestion was a new Fabia vRS or the Ibiza Bocanegra, but no chance! If its got to be the Golf I want the GT, but it will need to be 56 reg or newer to get the facelift grille, not much change from 10 large.

The odd Gti does crop up for reasonable money, but you will have to be patient.

I'm just not prepared to spend all the extra just for the badge - plus the Octavia is more practical....

I do like the GT with the 17" alloys but as you say its 10k for a 4 year old car - thats madness

I actually looked at the Altea FR and the Octavia vRS, because they seemed more comparable on space than the Leon.

The biggest problem with the Altea was the ride. Even on a level motorway it was choppy.

Ended up with the Octavia vRS (PD diesel), and i am now on my second (CR diesel).

yeah though about the Altea too - but as you rightly say the ride is awful !

lad i work with has a leon fr, personally i think they're far better inside with the chunky steering wheel and are much more to my taste, but on the other hand he's had nothing but trouble with it, my money would be on a K1 though, i'd sooner spend that bit extra for one of those

Depending where you are located, they can be had for between 7-8K, there was one on Autotrader up Merseyside, 2007MY 47k, and it was the 170bhp, £8250, if I could of been ar53d to drive 300 miles I would of had it.

of course its better than the interior on your mk1, but its pants compared to the mk2

IMO the interior is a no contest. the Fr dash doesnt look too bad if you get the sat nav unit built in, as it breaks it up slightly.

What is a K1 do you mean the high speed sports tourer Motorbike from bmw or the puny Kawasaki moped :giggle: or is it an acronym for something else ?

Edit found out what it is a cupra with a body kit :dull: . Never seen inside the leon, I once got a free portable CD radio with a £100 pound phone years ago, use it as a radio at work , and the facia looks better than that!! appalling :giggle:

The facia on the Seat is proper carp! but if I'm honest I prefer the steering wheel and seats. :dull:

It was if I remember, but as long as you conduct the approperiate checks I don't see it as a problem, my vRS is the first car I have ever got from a dealer. Albeit on ebay, which I paid 7400 quid last January..............now that is a bargain.

nah, i bought mine brand new for £12500

I have just traded a Leon FR TDI for an Octavia VRS TDI

The seat was a good car and only went back to dealers once for a DPF sensor. Suspension is very hard, great if your out to play, not so good on family runs and over speed bumps and potholes!

I had the full BTCC bodykit and thought it looked the part but not to everyones taste. Also the boot was only small.

Loving the octavia so far, better build quality for the interior, less creaks. Much bigger boot area. Takes a bit more parking so parking sensors are a good option.
