Is it meant to do this?

Featured Replies

Following a well-polished Scenic 4x4 along the road this morning I suddenly noticed, thanks to my Yeti's reflection in the Scenic's shiny backside as I pulled up behind it at some traffic lights, that my fog lights seemed to be on. I was running with the light switch in the auto position, and the lights were on dip beam. The fog light light was not illuminated and the switch was not pulled out. The fogs seemed to go out when I came to full stop.

Further down the road, negotiating a roadabout, it looked as though the fog light on the side that I was indicating came on.

Is it meant to do this?

If it is, how does it square with Highway Code Rule 236, and the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 regulations 25 & 27? It was bright and clear this morning, and visibility was not compromised in any way.

Must admit i'v not noticed this problem with mine as yet but then I'v got the day lights on as soon as i switch on the ignition. If its not to daft a question your not running with day time lights are you and thats what your seeing ?

Hi,

Your vehicle has corner fogs which will operate below 24mph with lights on.

In reverse both fogs should come on

turning or indicating will turn on the fog on the side of indication or turn (up to 24mph).

TP

Hi gp001,

the corner fog function is standard on the Elegance but sadly an option on the SE. Had them though on my previous SE and they work well.

Thanks, I didn't know that.

I still wonder how that would leave me if a policeman stopped me for having my fog lights on when the visibility is not "seriously reduced". It is a MUST NOT rule in the HIghway Code ie you are committing an offence if you do it. I know at least one police officer who has issued three-point penalties for inappropriate use of fog lights (I don't know what the endorsement code is, probably MS60 "Offences not covered by other codes"). And before anyone says anything about dark winter mornings: low ambient light levels are not the same as reduced visibility: visibility is about how far you can see, not how dark it is.

If the only way to stop it doing this is to turn the lights off, that rather seems to defeat the purpose of having automatic lights in the first place. And it doesn't get round the problem when it is actually dark enough to need lights anyway.

I suppose that EU guff has precedence over our domestic laws.

I understand you can turn the cornering Fog lights off in the maxidot.

Mike

The Black Night, 110 SE,. does not have corner fogs and does not have Auto position on the light switch.

It does however have day time running light's apparenly a requirement from next yr

Has anyone else noticed that the day runner is actually BETTER than "dip beam" ?

If my browse of the manual and the maxidot, followed by my drive home this evening is anything to go by, you can only turn off the cornering fog lights by turning off the cornering headlights as well, which I don't want to do.

Tis a shame.

I've just looked at the manual. If the light switch is on dipped lights and NOT on auto, I don't think the fog corner lights come on -

Edit: I can't read. Time to go to bed.

I am wrong.

I suppose the answer to OP's question is "YES, they do that!"

End of thread!

Update: I just had a call from John in Skoda Customer Service. He confirmed that the cornering front fogs have been approved for use in the UK - which is as I would have expected. He explained that this is because they only come on one light at a time, depending on which way you are turning/indicating. I did mention that I thought I had noticed both fog lights being on at one point. His suggestion was that I should take it to a Skoda retailer to get it checked because it isn't meant to do that. I think I shall see if I can catch it happening again before I do that. It's not easy, though, finding a suitably shiny vehicle to follow - especially in this weather!

Just remember that the top third of your foglights are in fact Day Time Running lights. Those are always on from the moment you start the car (if so set in the Maxidot). The bottom two thirds of the round lights are the real fogs and these should only come on one at a time depending on your steering angle and indicator positions. They will only ever both come on when you select reverse or of course if you switch the fogs on! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I'm pretty sure the lights I saw were the fogs, not the daytime running lights. If I do have an opportunity to check it out again then I'll make sure I have the DRLs turned off, to avoid any possibility of confusion.
