SAT NAV on the iPhone 4.

Featured Replies

I have recently downloaded NavFree from iTunes onto my iPhone 4. Great app, work a treat and it's FREE, but when I first set it up I could not get audio when I paired it to the car's bluetooth system (Bolero), worked fine through the phones speakers if I disable Bluetooth. I was certain it was not a problem with my phone or the system since my phone streamed audio without a problem when it was on it's own. After a bit of fiddling I solved the problem as follows:

If you pair the phone as normal, then on the phone select something and set it to play (in my case an audio book since I am an audio book fan) then select Media and BT on the Bolero, then whilst it is playing select the route on the NavFree and the audio will work fine, interrupting the audio book or music whilst giving the instructions, sometimes missing a word or two, but thats ok.

I have also found a good solution to the problem of where do you locate the phone so you have best (and safest) view of the map without mounting it on the dash, The phone (in it's Griffin Rubber case) fits neatly between speedometer and rev-counter, with its rubber case wedging it safely in place, taking over the position of the maxi dot display. Time will have to tell if the benefit of this position out ways the loss of the maxi dot display. For most of the journey the the phone lays charging in it's drinks holder and only comes up on the dash for the critical parts of the journey.

Hope this of interest to other iPhone users

Best of luck to you all

Do you think it would be a good idea if all the phone / BT advice that is coming in were to be collated and set as a pinned topic?

Sorry for the dumb newbie question - but what receives your GPS signals? The iPhone doesn't receive GPS does it?

Yes the iPhone has it's own inbuilt gps receiver, which works very well even in both positions shown in the photos.

Thanks for that.

I'm a TomTom iphone user and soon to get back behind a Columbus again - really miss it. Tom Tom is also great, it is not free, has traffic which is OK when there is a data signal, which surprisingly around London is highly variable, and I have found quite often very inaccurate. TMC is no better though.

The Tom Tom screen (iphone) is too small for me and the simpler instructions on the Maxidot are simply brilliant. If I didn't have a Columbus then it would be a different matter.

I have been looking for somewhere to charge the iphone, been thinking of an A pillar mounted Brodit active mount.

Roymac... This is a very neat and simple solution thanks. I also have some free sat nav apps on my iPhone and for those times I don't have my TomTom this is a very clever way of fixing the iPhone! 10 out of 10. Thanks. emoticon-0140-rofl.gif
