Winter tyre recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Having been loitering around gleaning knowledge off here for the last couple of months, I'm breaking cover with the exciting question of 'what tyres for...'

I'd like to get some decent winter specific tyres for the Fabia so the missus can manage her commute a bit better here in sunny Yorkshire, but it's proving a bit of a ball-ache due to the size (205/45/R16). Anyone got any recommendations, either for tyres or suppliers?

Cheers

Phil

Norway did a test of winter tyre with/without spikes.

Top 3 without spikes..

1. Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice +

2. Continental Viking Contact 5

3. Nokian Hakkapliitta R

Top 3 with spikes..

1. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7

2. Continental Contilce Contact

3. Bridgestone Nordenza 2 Evo

Personally I use today Nokian Hakkaplitta R but on my new fabia I am having Continental Viking Contact 5.. a good tyre that I am using at work..

(the different of those 3 top are not much..) http://www.vg.no/bil-og-motor/artikkel.php?artid=10025095 if u can read norwegian..

U dont need spikes if u dont want to visit the top of himalaya :)

I have done a good few miles on my new tyres now and even though the temperature is about freezing, they seem to hang on pretty well. To be honest they feel as though they almost (but not quite) have as much grip as my OE tyres. Obviously they will be noticeably better in wet/ice/snow conditions. They are quieter and smoother riding too, although I suspect they will wear out quicker. Just look at all those lovely sipes :)

mytyres have a small selection in your size, but they also sell higher profile tyres fitted to steel wheels, 185/55R15 or 195/55R15, either of which would be close enough not to noticeably affect the speedo reading. In terms of reasonable choices, the smaller size includes Nokia WR G2 and Vredestein Snowtrac 3, while the large size includes Continental and Goodyear.

Just trying to find somewhere that has them in stock is hard enough for me let alone finding tyres which have had good reviews. That's for the 2010 Fabia which I believe is 205/40/17. MyTyres draws a blank emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Thanks for all the pointers folks - was about to press the button on some Kumho KW23s (as they were pretty much the best availiable in the size) - until this morning they had gone up from £57 to £90 each on mytyres! :o

I'm afraid youve left it too late

Its that old chestnut...Supply and demand!!!

My local ytre garage tells me they cant satisfy demand at the moment.

Seems that people are getting wise to the merits of winter tyres .....but suppliers didnt!!!
