Best (cheap) mobile

Featured Replies

I might well treat myself to a new phone early next year, possibly Feb. Currently using a Nokia 6110 Navigator on a sim only contract with VF. As such I don't get upgrades.

Looking to spend <£150 on a handset only. Ideally would have GPS in built. I don't listen to music on phones much so not concerned with that too much.

Any recommendations? I have a Nokia bias because a) I have a house full of nokia chargers and B) I like the fact that their user interfaces are usually simple and consistent. However, my wife's had nothing but hassle with her nokia phones over the last two years or so.

I'm liking the iphone/HTC Desire type handsets, but not the price!

If you like a flip and prefer S40, the Nokia 3710 is quite nice.

If you like a flip, prefer S40, aren't bothered about GPS, want really cheap and simple, the Nokia 2720 is better than one would think -- just the thing for old 'uns who mainly want to make phone calls and who like big buttons.

6700 classic is a nice phone, GPS and all the usual bits.

Orange San Francisco - SIMfree from Play.com too

My wife's got one like this:

...although they have quite a few smartphones in your price range ATM! emoticon-0100-smile.gif

Don't know much about smart phones tbh. What is around in my (admittedly low!)price range? And what features would they have?emoticon-0148-yes.gif

They have allsorts at Expansys, so just use the site to search by price. In essence, a smartphone will allow you to browse the net, work as a sat nav, and run simple apps and games.

One word of warning, though - Expansys get some of their stuff from abroad, so make sure it's described as 'UK'...

Orange San Francisco is just about the best phone i have owned for the money. Play are doing them in white, sold out of all the grey @ £99. They are locked to Orange but can be unlocked for nothing - (google next gen server orange san francisco) . I have also removed all the orange rubbish by rooting the phone and using various free apps, without reflashing the software. It takes a couple of hours but now I have a phone of similar spec to high end HTC's and the Iphone for a 1/4 of the price. Using on Vodafone with no problems.

Anyone tried the Garmin smartphone? I was flicking through a Smartphone magazine earlier and saw an advert for one.

Thinking of the HTC Desire. This has GPS doesn't it? Seem to recall several threads complaining of lack of robust bluetooth connectivity though?

No issues with the bluetooth on my Desire (well, certainly not with the car kit anyway) but it's considerably higher than your £150 limit...

Opinions on the HTC Wildfire??

That's changing the rules... Are you sure you're not female? emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Widfire looks ok, it's not as powerful as the Desire and the screen resolution is lower, but if you're not used to a smartphone it may well suffice...

However, if you get into the smartphone way you may regret it as it doesn't have the grunt of the higher end phones and may start struggling with some apps and future updates (if it gets them without resorting to xda-developers...)

I'm toying with the idea of getting the Wildfire for my daughters 13th Birthday next year as she loves my Desire...

Not last time I looked! :giggle: To be honest my current deal with VF doesn't quite meet my needs, and my contract expires in Jan. So I might just go with a new contract with another supplier.

I've never had a smartphone before, the current 6110 navigator is the closest I've come to it. I was thinking of the Wildfire only cos I've read such poor reviews of the battery life on the Desire....but you're right, I am quite likely to wish I'd bitten the bullet and got the better one!

Raglits, not thinking of upgrading your phone and selling the desire are you?

Don't tempt me, I've only had the Desire since September though so that's too early even for me to look at changing phones emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

woo hoo!! Just been on to VF and have got a Desire and a Wildfire for me and swmbo coming on Monday for the grand sum of £4.99!!

And our tariffs have been adjusted to suit our average usage so should be cheaper month by month as well! Result!
