Another winter tyre question...

Featured Replies

The hot topic it seems (see what I did there?)

Anyway, so stock is low everywhere I've checked but I'm having a bigger problem. When I check sites such as Camskill for winter tyres, they don't stock winter tyre sizes in the following spec 205/40/17. Closest they have is 205/45/17. Will my 2010 Skoda Fabia vRS cope with those? Anyone tried? Apologies if the question has been asked but I did a little Google beforehand :p

Received an update from the people at Camskill and Blackcircle who say they can't get tires in that size in the UK :dull:

I don't think 205/45/17 will fit easily and will rub against the arches. So I'm probably going to have to downsize. But to what size? :S

195/55R15 if 15" wheels will fit over your front calipers otherwise then either 195/50R16 (very limited choice) or 205/45R16 (also a limited choice).

Yes was looking at 205/45/16 mate as they have almost exactly the same rolling radius as 205/40/17. Seems to be a good choice. Thinking of getting Toyo Snowprox in that size but wasn't sure if they'd fit or not.

Go to a narrower tyre if you can if you are worried about grip in the snow.

If you make the profile of the tyre larger and the diameter of the inner rim go down, is this acceptable?

For example:

I have 205/40/17 right now.

Can I change to 190/50/16?

According to Visual Tyre Size Indicator this seems fine. I'm a proper tyre noob so any advice is appreciated

As long as the overall diameter is within a couple of % it will be fine and won't affect your speedo reading.

I got Goodyear Eagle Ultragrip GW-3's in 205/45 x 16 from mytyres and have to say I'm very impressed with them.

Have performed well in heavy rain and got their first taste of snow last night and coped admirably on the Fabia.

Yeh I looked at those mate. Expensive but seem to get good reviews and people like them.

Just realised I'll need some rubbish caps to go with them if I move down a tyre size

Could I buy some winter tyres, 205/45/16 and then stick these on them when there fitted?

Bog standard rims

That would be job done?

Thanks

I couldn't be bothered with all the hassle of working out different tyre sizes so put 205/45 x 16's on standard alloys. Pleased to say they're working well! :)

Just another question??

Would octy Mark 1 steelies fit the Fabia 2, I'm looking at getting a set of steelies to replace my alloys for the winter it would either be 15 or 16 inch steelies.

Hope you can help?

Davy

If the stud pattern is 5X 100...They should fit

Fitted my old Octy 15" steelies on my fabia 2 no problem.

Grand not a problem thanks guys.

Any answer to this? :giggle:

The link points to wheel trims ... they're not wheels. If you're asking whether the wheel trims would fit on 16" wheels, then the answer is (probably) yes if the wheels are steel but no if the wheels are alloys.

shouldn't be any problem with external size if you follow the stock fabia 15" & 16" tyre sizes - 15" seems easier to get, just need to know if fits over brakes OK. Cost of steel wheels seems cheap to me compared with at least £20 per tyre to change winter tyres on and then off again each time.

Thinking the simpler option would be this: Winter Tyres with Steel Rims

To my knowledge: 1.9 TDI spec should still fit the new 2010 Fabia (same size, bolt alignment etc)

I have not yet seen any wheel trims bigger than 15". So I'm not sure where you can 16" ones.
