Looking for diesal estate !

Featured Replies

Hello

I,m hoping to buy a second hand Octavia estate,

I've set a limit of 9k, and have been searching Ebay for cars.

one or two look promising.

I'm going to look at a couple tomorrow.

one of them is a 56 PLATE SKODA OCTAVIA 2.0 TDI PD 140 BHP SPECIAL EDITION LAURIN + KLEMENT DIESEL ESTATE.

I have read on which car the 2.0 liter models suffered flywheel problems can anyone throw any light on this ?

Hi and welcome, I too went through this and plumped for 1.9 ambiente. 56 plate estate from BCA car auctions (sites all about the uk, internet bidding too). Does seem a little weedy on occasion but unless you're a speed freak it's absolutely fine. I do about 25k miles a year and am a tight @rse so the near 55-60mpg ,£110 tax and £100 cheaper insurance are a major plus to me.

All the toys with the higher spec models are a real plus, but not a necessary IMHO as most cars have decent specs.

As for the 2.0 and I'm no expert, I think there are some issues with the dual mass flywheel and also the drive on the balancer shafts. But it's not that common. As with most internet forums people tend to highlight the bad bits.

Most of the Octy's I saw on fleebay where dealers. Have a look on British Car Auctions site, they usually have about 50 diesel Octy's nation wide and a couple of sites not too far from you, they can deliver too. With your budget you should pick up a stunning late model.

Hi Thanks for the reply,

I've had a look at the BCA site there are some cars on their that look ok.

I don't know if I would be bold enough to bid on line for one.

you're right about the ebay cars been mainly dealers,

I,m not a speed freak, and not too worried about the specs, but I do have to sell the idea of owning a Skoda to her indoors :giggle:

I have 1.9 Estate and on hindsight may be should have plumped for 2.0 as 1.9 is less refined for me though MPG and pulling power is good..

so many cars its hard to decide :(

I have a 1.9 Diesel Estate, wish I had gone for the VRS now... overtaking some prat doing 40-50 in a NSL takes some praying...

The MPG on the VRS isn't much lower than the 1.9, 40-50mpg instead of 50-60mpg? Which is still pretty good considering the performance equals a Petrol that can do 20-30mpg.

*mpg figures plucked out of the air, but you get the general gist.

The 2.0 had the disadvantage of the DPF which none of the 1.9's have plus changing the timing belt on the 1.9's is cheaper I believe.

4x4 and Scout get the DPF, as does the vRS, but all other UK 2l diesels don't have the DPF (PD engines)

I've had an Octavia 2.0 140 diesel elegance etate for 3 years now ,it's 5 years old and it is superb. I get at least 55 to 60 mpg all the time, admittedly I'm retired so I don't commute. I had a bet with my son I could get more mpg any day than him, he has a Golf. I got 78.2 ! for the day. If you were thinking I was a slow old lad I used to be a Police response car driver (A cop for 30 yrs) so I do know how to drive.

I owned a 1.9 for 3 years and never regretted not going for a 2.0. Yes if you spend all day overtaking you may find the performance not upto par but it suited my new relaxed style of driving. I have had a V8's in one guise or another since been 18 though so I've had my performance fix.

The 1.9 may not be as refined as the 2.0 but I dont think theirs much in it. Their's bags of low down torque that makes it dead relaxing to drive. My commute is only 3 miles each way which would not have suited the DPF in a 2.0.

On a long journey just stick the cruise on at 57mph and watch the fuel consumption hover around 60mpg. I think the best I had out of a tank was 615 miles !

The performaance on my new 1.8 Scout is great but if I had to go back to the old 1.9 it would not break my heart.

If you are looking for an L&K try and find a 2007 onwards model as it was revised around April that year with loads more toys on it like electric driver seat, 17" 'Sputnik' alloys, xenons etc.

It only came with the 2.0 TDI engine minus the DPF which is good as the PD injector system was never designed with a DPF in mind.

Watch out for cylinder head issues, some 2.0 TDIs were prone to cracks on the ally head up until around 2008 when head revision C was fitted. Poor starting (coughing and spluttering) and coolant loss are the main symptoms.

I would still opt for a 2 litre though.

well I've just got back from looking at the LAURIN + KLEMENT DIESEL ESTATE.56 plate.

didn't fancy it to be honest, 82 000 miles, keyed on offside rear door, a dent in the bonnet, and all the alloys scuffed all for the bargain price £7985.

by the way whats a DPF ?

Doesn't sound like a very good example to me, bide your time and a decent one will come up.

Well thanks for all the post you've made me feel right welcome.

Her in doors as kindly promised our old focus to one of the girls at her work for xmas so I've been told to get a move on an sort out a car :'(

you could try looking at

http://www.autoquake.com

as lots of leased skodas pass through here

This one looks good http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201047373616716/sort/priceasc/usedcars/fuel-type/diesel/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/price-to/9000/body-type/estate/transmission/manual/model/octavia/make/skoda/radius/1500/page/3/postcode/bn161dx?logcode=p

It has all the whistles and bells and is just like my old one. I let mine go at 147,000 miles and the car still looked good and drove brilliantly.

Ah yes, I've just realised you are in Harrogate, I subconsciously saw it as Harrow :giggle:

It's a shame its so far away, looks like a good motor. Needs a bloody clean though :D

Wasn't it a bit earlier than that? I'd heard late 2006 quoted previously I think.

My car was built in June 2007 and was fitted with a revision B cylinder head which went on to crack across the outlet valves in 3 out of the 4 cylinders.

It was fitted with a revision C head in December 2009 . I was told the rev B was used right into 2008.

I know the revision A heads used to drop like flies, IIRC the BKD was first fitted to the A3 in 2003 (53) and I'm unsure when the rev B head was introduced.

Ok, I keep meaning to check the head version on mine but haven't got round to it. From what you say it sounds like mine could be a revision B head too.

EDIT: Just had a quick look under the engine cover and mine is a 'C' fortunately. I'm not sure exactly when it was built but it was registered Oct '07.

I had a 2006 model 2.0Tdi L&K estate with the DSG auto gearbox.

I had to have my DMF (dual mass flywheel) and the air conditioning compressor replaced. Both cost me in the region of £1000-£1300 each.

Apart form that the car was utterly reliable and a joy to drive. I did also have a magic bos fitted which upped the power and torque. I was getting on average 45-50mpg from the auto.
