Think i bought a bad'un.

Featured Replies

Well. Think off all my posts on here have been pretty much asking how to fix something!

Looking at a possible 2k+ bill after 1 month of ownership.

Bought the car knowing it needed a new steering rack.

MOT is due in 2 weeks and for that i need: 2 new tires, disks + pads all around + steering rack

The oil service light also came on so i ended up paying JKM to do that.

At this point, it looks okay.

Untill last week, when it started not boosting properly which the garage said was a fueling fault and a fuel change and some additive would sort it out.

2 weeks after my oil service change from JKM, the red oil light flashes. So i check the dipstick... no oil. I fill her up. Now tonight, cuts out 7 times, trouble starting and once again, the red light, no oil.

Thanks JKM!

After looking at at my filler cap what do i see? Creamy substance! Suspect headgasket (we all know its a £600+ job)

Also the happening of my missing oil is also suspect to a faulty turbo and which the oil has been running into my boost pipes which may have caused alot of engine damage.

I dont know about you.

But wheres my luck

Anything to keep as a positive to make me keep the fabia?

So essentially its the one, all be it quite bad sounding issue?

Get it to a decent independent and find out exactly what the issue is and what it`ll cost.

Steering rack

Turbo

Engine damage

Headgasket.

More than one by the looks of it to me...

Getting the original work done on wednesday (steering rack + fuel filter stuff)

Getting them to look into the oil usage. Hopefully the white cream is just the condensation or w.e...?

Did you not buy it knowing about the steering rack? :wonder: The white stuff can be down to short journeys or not warming up properly, which is easy done in this weather. And the other stuff? Has it already been diagnosed?

Miss informed about the rack sorry.

I dont even notice it in honesty. But after the service i was told it was leaking. After getting it up on ramps and putting fluid in... it all came out rather quickly ha.

Heres what the filler cap looks like:

DSC00071-1.jpg

I do alot of short journey a day. 15 mins max. To college and back etc.

Theres also some creamy stuff in the inside edge top of the tube where the filler cap goes.

Havent had a chance to check if theres any oil in the coolant.

Need a VCDS check but no one local is replying ha. Enquired from VW and they want £44 so may have to do that. Like said, car is undrivable and getting towed into garage n wednesday. Will see what they say but will definatly get it scanned anyways.

I`m no expert, but i`m pretty sure that`d be a lot worse if it were the gasket. If the turbo has gone, decent used ones can be had cheap, got mine back on the road after it went for £250.

I sure hope so ha :)

Worst fears are just that i havent done any internal damage due to lack of oil

Makes me think if JKM did a dodgey oil service...

Life goes on ha.

Time will tell... Thanks for the replys!

Headgaskets very rarely go on these engines. I bet its more likely to be something else. Maybe your oil cooler is leaking a little? However, that is also a rare occurence.

I'm sure there are a few members with vagcom down your way. If JKM is doing the work, they might be able to see what is on the ECU?

Seems a shame mate, does sound like you may have baught a pup

Ive pmed the members will HEX CAN and none have got back to me

Will double check the list and try again though :D

Like said, ill get it to the garage and let them do their job haha :)

Give them a nice big list of things to check :)

After then, will see if they find anything and still get it checked on VCDS anyways.

That's nothing on your oil filler cap, clean it off replace and don't worry about that.

1 issue down then haha :D

getting better :)

Just annoying since after going from a saxo to this... would have expected the opposite to what ive had :)

Atleast ill know ive got a sturdy base to start with

I would never say its JKM as they have been amazing to me and very thorough every time Ive been to them, please don't give them a bad name as I have nothing but good reviews for them (I drive from high wycombe to go to them as i can trust and respect them)

however i feel sorry for you, i just had to fund a few bills with mine, I am now penny less :(

hope it all gets sorted soon enough, good luck!

Any garage can have a bad day (I had a very embarassing moment with a MAJOR forum sponsor who incorrectly fitted some components for me and I took it into my local Skoda dealer who basically said - "What cowboy did this?") so don't think it can't happen. When I tackled said foum sponsor about it they accepted it was quite possible they had routed the brake pipes the wrong way and apologised, but that didn't get me my £140 for rectification work back from the Skoda dealer. And now SWMBO will only let me take the vRS to the Skoda dealer because the "expert" independents are a bunch of cowboys.

This is going to sound COLD, but you've bought a lemon. From what I recall you bought the only yellow car on sale when you went looking and it sounds like it's not been serviced in a while. The service indicator light will only come on after a year of not being reset, so that should have been an indication of when it was last worked on and if all the brake parts need doing then it sounds like it was probably on the original set. Is there service history with the car? It really sounds like a car someone hasn't cared for. I know a Polish girl who bought a 7 year old Citroen AX for £750 and didn't service it for 5 years because it always passed an MOT. OK, so she only did 3000 miles per year, but 5 years without a service? If you bought her car you'd probably think - "Excellent! Two owners, very low mileage, no recent stamps in the service book, but it's only done 48,000 miles in 12 years and look at the condition of the bodywork." By the time she was forced to trade it in it needed a clutch, 4 new springs, 4 new shock absorbers, a complete engine rebuild and an MOT. The dealer she traded it in to never drove it. He took one look at the odometer, another look at the seats and bodywork and gave her twice what the book value was because 'I can sell this tomorrow".

You say you do lots of short journeys - 15 mins or so. Well, that will just kill a turbo car. And if you're a typical young man you probably like to 'drive' it as well? I reckon mine takes about 20 miles to properly warm up, so a 15 minute run through town will never see it properly up to temperature.

Have you asked JKM why it is that 2 weeks after they changed the oil the car is empty and it sounds like you have major issues? Sometimes you need to establish a relationship with a dealer (and that can mean spending a lot of money).

I do suspect however that your best course of action is to get an MOT on it, fill it with oil and trade it in for something else.

I agree.

The service history is fine.

The oil service light only came on a few weeks after i bought the car,

Nice irony with the 'Lemon' comment ha :)

As far as i could see... he was a genuine seller... but thats a risk anyone can take...

Im going to get the work done needed to get it through the MOT and see how it goes from there.

I bought is for £3900 so i paid 700 ish under the market value. This has given me a bit of room but getting it to an MOT point will bring me up to that £4500 mark ish,

Will have to see, might be a few unlucky things at once.

If i sold up, then bought another, whos to say i would have any more issues.

Whole blt engine on 33k on eBay . . .

Sorry to hear about this mate, let us know how you get on

What's the milage mate?

I got mine a year a go for £4500 with 100k on the clock, so spending a bit to get it fixed doesn't sound too bad. Granted, you don't want to have to do it but such is life :-)

Sounds like maybe the Turbo has blown? A lot of my oil disappeared when my turbo blew... but it was very obvious mine blew! It made a hideous screeching noise when started and there was a nice amount of white smoke. You should be able to fairly easily tell if it's a blown turbo. There'll likely be lots of oil in the intercooler pipes, and obviously no boost... If it's a blown turbo - provided no damage has been done by still driving it around with no oil - you should be OK. I'm a very unlucky one too, but a new turbo slapped on it, cleaned the entire turbo / air intake system / boost pipes of oil (EGR was hideous!), and mine's better than ever now!

75k milleage. It was running fine, but then again. I have nothing to compare it to!

It struggles to start up like 15 seconds or so, but when its going to cut out it just judders violently which i KNOW is down to fueling.

There is not smoke or wierd noises and i still get a little spooling whistle, however, i can hear something that sounds like puffs of air constantly. Like a pump going "T T T T T T T" (if that makes sense)

Time will only tell :)

Oh, and ive built a relationship with a small garage near me that is struggling with business atm. Win win.

Craig, I've just read through this lot, and would suggest you get someone to visually and manually check all the emissions control plastic pipes. I'm almost certain that yout T T T sound is a broken oil breather pipe, which might account for your oil consumption and flat spot.

Sounds like something to try. Im getting a nice big list together for the garage to check haha

I first thought it was a flat tire pushing out air, like evertime it went round. Was a constant speed of the ticking noise or airy noise thing.

Something else added into the equation!

T T T T T sounds like my wife most nights, once all the problems have gone youl love the car.

Ill ignore the first part haha :)

And yeah i know. Crack on wednesday when in find out the extent of the damage haha.

I'm really interested to see what is actually wrong. It must be some sort of block failure, be positive mate, at the end of the day even if you have a rebuild. You will have a car with a brand new engine for a fraction of the price.

It happens to us all, my third corsa (1.6) had fsh 59k etc mint everything. . . By 62k the big end shells had gone leaving my with a a hole the size of a golf ball and missing a rod!

Still, think of it my way, got me through when my corsa blew.
