Felicia fails MOT

Featured Replies

Hi, Wife's 99 Felly failed MOT on brake pipes. Fella has quoted £140 to replace seven of them. He seems straight up, is this a fair price.

Found out from a local dealer they charge £74 an hour labour, your price does not seem too bad where you are.

Seven on them is pretty much all of them surely? That seems a fair price to do all that.

I'd bite his hand off for that price! I once replaced every single brake pipe of a vw camper, fiddly, rust in your eyes job, not difficult a pain tho.

Thanks. I thought so, he seemed quite genuine but I've been ripped off before (HI-Q), just checking.

If you can pay a little extra and get him to make them up out of kunifer then they should last better than the cheaper alloy that's mostly copper. I believe copper brake pipes are illegal in some countries, but not the UK for some reason.

If you don't fancy doing them yourself then £140 is a fair price assuming a good job is done :)

buy the brake pipes from the skoda dealer, they are about £10 each and they come pre-bent with the ends/flares on them ready to fit.

on a non-abs model there are 6 hard pipes, and 4 flexi-hoses in total

Cheers peeps. We need it done quick so I'll have to go with him. But only 6 hard pipes! He said seven. Could he be including hoses too? That's quite a simple job to do and would be expensive if he's charging £20 to change a hose. Any idea how much hoses cost?

From Skoda, about £12 for the front pair and £8 for the rear pair. If I've done my sums right I reckon you'd get change from £70 for a complete set of pipes and hoses from a dealer - considering the time and effort saved on bending and flaring, etc., I'd agree with Tom given the choice. However, as mentioned the original quote does sound pretty reasonable especially if you can get it done quickly.

Yeah, aftermarket hoses about £10 or so each, but remember that he needs to bleed the brakes too.... I'd never have thought that Skoda still have brake pipes available, but if they do then that's clearly the way forward. Still an awkward job to do (not difficult, just a messy under-the-car pain in the bum), so he's definitely not ripping you off if that many pipes need doing.

They said no go when I asked for Favorit ones about 2 years ago. The originals are quite good though, I believe they're steel and have a lacquer coating to help prevent rust.

you can deffo get new brake pipes for a felicia from the skoda dealer.. i know this because i bought a set a few months ago..

the trickiest ones to change are the ones that go from the master cylinder to the bias valve on the rear axle because you need to drop the front suspendsion subframe off to get decent access

Just for anyone wondering if they are still available I ordered a Felly brake pipe from the dealer yesterday.
