How long does it take for engine to fully run in?

Featured Replies

Mine's got 2500 Km on it and it's still "evolving". What do I mean by evolving?

1. fuel consumption is constantly improving

2. engine sound is different than 500 km ago

3. the turbo even sounds a bit different

4. the performance is constantly improving

5. the gearbox is getting a bit smarter (could be better but still better than in the beginning)

I found my previous 1.9 tdi took nearly 20,000 (mles) to run in - it definitely seemed to improve after 17,000, but this seems to be normal for this engine?

I've got the 1.4 tsi now and have only got 400 on the clock, so hope it'll take less time than the diesel!

I remember when i got my brand new Focus ST, that took about 5-6000 miles to settle but my Octavia vRS TDI CR is taking longer, am finding the same as you, its improving every time I' m driving it, so far done 10,000 miles.

General opinion is that diesels take longer than petrols to wear in.

Every engine is different but at a guess 10k miles for a petrol and 30k for a diesel?

You'll get as many answers as there are people but my TFSI seemed to stop 'changing' at about 10k miles or 16k km.
