Rain Repellent in Winter

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I'd just like to share my experiences from last weekend, which made me realise just how important a good rain repellent on your windscreen can be at times.

I was driving along the M8 in heavy snow, with lots of slush and salt spray being thrown up from other vehicles. Naturally, this meant increased use of the wipers and screenwash. Fine, until my wiper fuse blew... :doublesho

I was left with no front wipers or screenwash at all. Because of the sheer amount of crap quickly accumulating on the screen, I reckon I would have had to pull over and call the AA. However, because I had a decent coat of rain repellent on my screen, I was able to continue at reduced pace to somewhere safer, off the motorway. The water and much was being dispersed at a rate that meant I could carry on for a while.

I would therefore strongly suggest you consider finding time to apply a rain repellent product to your screen this winter. I feel the momentary smearing you get when you use your wipers is a small price to pay for increased visibility.

Incidentally, the cause of the fuse blowing was the screenwash in the washer pipes freezing. When the pump was engaged, it was put under increased load and blew the fuse. This could happen to anyone, and is also a very good advert for ensuring you have a damn strong mix of screenwash fluid in your reservoir at the current low temperatures.

Of course, I'm not suggesting a coat of rain repellent means you won't need to use your wipers! :doublesho

This is the stuff I used. It's unlike similar products I've tried, as it is in gel form. It applies easily, and unlike many other products such as Rain-X, I found it to buff off very easily too:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/229809/comma_provision_rain_clear_gel.html

As an aside, there was a nearby Kwik-Fit open along the road. I pulled in there to see if they could check my fuses. They came back half an hour later, saying they were all fine and that they'd need to call their auto electrician. No need, said I , I'll take the car as it is. I checked the fuses myself, found they had lied to me, and fixed the problem in no time ;)

Take care out there.

Andrew

Mine needs somemore on but think it might freeze before i could wipe it off seeing it's -6 here :dull:

Keeping a selection of spare fuses in the car is also helpful

I recently took delivery of some AQUAPEL

Looking forward to the weather warming up a bit so I can spend some time treating all my glass.

Bought a 4 pack via ebay for about £17 so should have enough to treat the whole car.

I am looking for a decent glass cleaner/cutting solution as there is an old treatment already on the car

of some other water repellent presumably applied by the previous owner.

It may well be aquapel, the coating on the windscreen has taken a year or so to deteriorate,

the side and rear windows are still pretty repellent though.

I want to be sure the windows are properly clean before I apply the new stuff.

Any suggestions? ;)

I put aquapel on my last car and liked it. It didn't smear.

Keeping the windscreen clear this last week has been nigh on impossible! Even after putting screen wash in neat!

So anything that helps is a welcome for me!

Never heard of the two products above and thought Rain X had the market sewn so its off to Halfords

Make sure your screen is cleaner than clean before applying.

And give it a good buff once on.

Always worth remembering to clean your wiper blades too. Otherwise the dirty blades will smear everything.

The G4 glass polish is very good just make sure you don't leave it on for long..PITA to remove otherwise.

Still using aquapel after buying a card from a motorfactor in the states when on holiday in August, be interested to see results of this other stuff because so far aquapel has been the best I have found and used. Driving back from Inverness in the rain a few weeks ago I never had to have the wiper's on, the rain just streamed off the screen when I was up to 50mph +

I applied the Aquapel to my windscreen yesterday when it reached a whopping 4 degrees.

It says not to use it at lower than 10 degrees but a bit of searching around on the net

revealed that as long as there's no real risk of freezing then you should be okay.

It was a doddle to apply although you have to work quickly as theres just enough for

a windscreen in 1 applicator pad.

My winscreen was far easier to scrape this morning than

any of the other windows on the car. First impressions and I'm pleasantly impressed.

A bit later in the day I had to pop to the Post Office. There were a few specks of water

on my windscreen when I got in the car from where ice had defrosted on the roof

and water had run down onto the screen. At 30mph the beads ran up the screen

Let's see how long it lasts.... I had heard of the G techniq stuff but I got the impression that

it needs to be applied by a pro so that rules me out. :D

This for me was a happy medium, I'll see how it is after the winter has taken its toll.

Didn't think you'd be disappointed! ;)

Cheers mate, to say I am excited about doing that motor is a little bit of an understatement, it's going to be in a bad way after having been stood for so long.............

G-Techniq G3 will do the same but from around 30mph

It's only the C1 Crystal Paint Lacquer which is for professional use only, all other products are available to joe public on their website

It'll be fine :giggle: ...aiming for perfection.

I hope it's being kept indoors after the effort involved?! ;)

has anyone heard of anti fog.

I've been ebaying for rain repellent and came across this package:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RAIN-X-RAIN-ANTI-FOG-CLEAR-MIST-REPELLENT-TWIN-PACK-/310262320145?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item483d134c11

apparently anti fog is to be used on the inside of a windscreen to prevent it steaming up, sounds too good to be true, i mean, where does the moisture go

Yep, Halfords have their own brand as well which is just as good as the Halfords products although to be fair I don't use such a product any more as I wasn't convinced............ :S

  • 3 weeks later...

I used some anti-fog from Halfords. Worked OK for a while but it wasn't amazing

Having now been using G-Technic over the winter past months I am sold, more details using this to follow, truley awesome stuff.............
