How long for a CR170 FL to heat up

Featured Replies

In this cold weather , My FL CR VRS has taken ages to heat up.

I have tried leaving it running on the drive for 10 mins, doesn't even move the needle.

When i drive to work if i take the 'a' 'roads i get struck in jams so don't get above 30 mph usually and most times the car is not upto operating temperture after 10 miles of driving when i get to work.

If i take the motorway it is better gets to operating temp when i get to work eg after 10 miles at 70mph.

Just wondered what ever ones elses does?

all the others cars i have had usually heat up on the driveway after 5 mins of running.

My 4x4 take awhile, but the main problem i have is living on top of a hill. The engine doesn't have to work for nearly half my 10mile commute. I did wonder about shielding half the radiator in this colder weather, but just decided to leave it.

Mine VRS CR takes ages 14 mile trip this morning still not fully upto temp.

Mind you it was minus 9

My CR170 took over an hour to reach full temperature this morning at minus 6. The joy of heated seats!

No point blocking the rad, the stat will stay closed until you reach ~90 degrees.

It's the downside to a very efficient engine I'm afraid.

General advice in last few years is that you should not keep your car idling to warm up. Engines want to be moving not idling. And diesel at tickover will not warm up anyway as you say.

Modern diesels are so thermodynamically efficient that there is little 'spare' heat to warm the engine in very cold temperatures, and why they take much longer than equivalent petrols in the same conditions.

It took mine a 30 mile drive and an hour before the needle hit top centre. It was -9 all the way here too.

My 3 litre 6 cylinder BMW petrol would be blasting out hot air almost immediately. One of the reasons the Octy drinks way less fuel!

I thought all modern VAG diesels had ceramic heating elements so you got warm air immediately anyway?

I thought all modern VAG diesels had ceramic heating elements so you got warm air immediately anyway?

Audi and VW may have, but my Skoda doesn't...

Mine takes an age to get the needle to the middle, but I get warm air within about 5 mins or so of driving.

Not sure why others don't?? :S

The air coming out of the vents is warm in a few minutes, but that's it, only warm air. The longer I'm driving the hotter it gets

There could be confusion between the availability of warm air and the car warming up, most people define a car as 'warmed up' when the needle hits 90. Obviously there is warm air long before that.

PTC heaters are for the colder countries (obviously not for us then) and its a shame it's not offered in the UK, is not an overly expensive bit of kit. I would rather have a PTC in lieu of a heated windscreen thanks.

My Scout was up to normal operating temperature the other day - 90°C.

I nipped round to see a friend and left the engine running whilst I was talking to him at the side of the road.

20 minutes later I jumped back in and the temperature gauge had dropped down to 45°C!

A temperature drop like that is normal as the heating system is pulling out more heat than the combustion process can put in if left to idle for a while.
