Fabia cutting out in cold weather

Featured Replies

I have had it all up to now, wiper fuse going when washer motor freezes, alarm going off at 3 am and every half hour after that and to top it all it cut out in the middle of busy traffic, i was popular! It did start after a while as a result of the accelerator being pumped and depressed during cranking, happened twice now in the freezing conditions, could it be diesel thickening, how much petrol should I put in to help it stay fluid, if it is that.

Ah well, another sleepless night keep turning off the alarm and worrying about not getting to work, any ideas on the cutting out. I don't want to fall out with it!

I`v no real advice, although i doubt its the diesel thickening. Anti freezing agents are added during winter, and i`v not heard of any issues tbh

If you can get access to VCDS then you can see the fuel return temperature. I think (I'm not 100% certain) that the fuel is pumped to the injectors and anything not used is returned to the fuel tank via a small radiator under the car. There is a sensor in there that opens and closes the radiator so I think your fuel will be warm after a few minutes. If fuel was freezing then I think it would be a more widespread issue. I certainly wouldn't be putting any petrol in it, especially when you don't know what the actual problem is.

The usual problem is waxing of the fuel in the filter, but if you have winter diesel in, then shouldn't be a problem. What could cause problems is if you have a lot of water in the filter. I'd suggest changing the filter. Can't do any harm and cheap and easy to do.

Thanks for your advice everyone, have ordered a air filter, oil and fuel off Ebay for 25 pounds, the problem seems to go when the weather warms a little, so will try new fuel filter.

You can disable the alarm by clicking the 'lock' button on the key a second time after the doors have locked. Obviously you'd want to get it sorted ASAP, but it will help in the meantime... Cutting out might be contaminated fuel, if replacing the fuel filter doesn't fix it - it's only happened to me once, and it cleared itself (after I'd called the AA, of course!)
