Oil in air filter

Featured Replies

Hi

Today I changed the air filter and I noticed that there is oil coming from the small tube (that comes from the engine). So the old airfilter has in a corner a small oil mark...

Is it normal to come oil there?

It is a 50.000 km Fabia 1.4 16V 101 HP

Thanks

Radu

It's probably a breather pipe from the engine, have you over filled the engine oil at any point ?

Yes, last time they changed oil, it was a little over the max... but now it is under max...

Sounds like it has just bled over. I would change the filter and see how it goes. You can damage an engine if you overfill it by large amounts of oil but it sounds like yours didn't get that bad.

Yes, now I have new air filter, complete clean area and oil under max.

I will see in the next weeks what is happening there.. I hope it was something isolated..

Is it recommendable to drive a while with the tube disconnected? I mean "in the air" ? :)

Not 100% sure but on older cars it didn't matter but you might get a little oil over the engine if you disconnected it.

:) That is exactly what I want to see... if it is a lot, then I have a problem, if there are some drops, I am happy :)

Other thing I want to try today is to open the oil cap filler with idle engine, to see if there is some pressure there...

I would suspect that is a bad idea unless you want oil spray all over you or the oil bay !

I am not 100% sure but it sounds like water in the oil !

I am no expert but it sounds like the head gasket has gone and it pressurising the engine which may or caused the pump over into the air filter, but that is only a guess.

Does it look something like:

Seems to be a pretty common thing on the 1.6 engine, suspect it might be similar on the 1.4...usually just condensation on the oil filler cap...

Tomorrow I post picture with my cap... looks verys similar with the one in picture above..

I drive every day 2 km x 4 times (home->work->lunch->work->home) !

So condensation can be a cause...

I'd highly recommend taking it out for a little longer drive at least once a week in that case. Also better for the catalytic converter and fuel economy perhaps ;)

A little emulsification is normal, especially on cars that only do short journeys.

Oil in the air filter is very common on the 1.4 16v, especially the AUB and AUA engines. Keep an eye on your oil useage, a little oil is fine but to much and it may well start messing up things like your manifold pressure sensor and lambda probes. If it starts using to much oil then it may be a sign of worn piston rings. This seems to be a bit of an issue witha small number of these engines and Skoda cover piston rings up to four years old for this problem but require a consumption test to be done at a dealer first.

Thank you very much for your answers.

Oil consumption is very less, almost nothing... between chages (13-15.000 km) I put something like 200 grams. So oil consumption is ok.

From now on, every Sunday we (me, wife and car) will go out for "long" journeys ! ;)

Do you know more about this? Should I go to my local Skoda dealer and ask? I am in Germany. Maybe I get at least the compression test for free ;)

Thank you

Radu

To be honest if your consumption is very low its more than likely just fine.

One small further question... to avoid opening a new thread...

Currently I am using Castrol GTX7 Dynatec 5w40 and I intend to switch to Castrol Formula RS 0W-40. Are there any sideeffects ?

Thank you very much for the very good support!
