On a windows PC..

Hit F8 when booting and select Boot into last known good profile.

If this fails, try again but using Safe Mode.

If this fails, try booting of installation CD and fix windows.

Failing that, it's time to format and start again.

Have you made any changes to the OS recently which could have caused this? Updated drivers? etc?

it could also be caused by an untidy shutdown which has left the disk inconsistant. You need to use an XP CD and boot into recovery console and from there run a CHKDSK with the option to check the disk even though it thinks its clean.

It was working fine the other day...well thats if you can call it ok!!...its always been slow at booting up and shutting down and is always slow at opening web pages!! and it is a few years old now...ive tried using clean up software like Cclean but nothing has made it any better!!...Then last night i went to boot it up and i got the error message!!

Il try the F8 when i get home....i dont think i know where the windows boot disk is if that doesnt work!!

The install disk wouldnt do anything...the screen would go blank for about 20 secs then the error message would come back on the screen!!

Did it come up with something like "press any key to boot from CD"?

If not, sounds like it's not trying to boot from the CD drive.

You may need to go into BIOS settings (either DEL or F2) and select boot device priority.

From there, you can tell it to check the disc drive before booting from the HDD..

This should then allow you to boot the installation disc, unless it's the incorrect disc and isn't bootable..

You need a disc that says recovery, or original operating system disc. Not one that says drivers and software or something along those lines.

Kev,

Its not coming up with anything apart from the system 32 error evertytime i try something! Il try and see if i can get into the BIOS tonight. The disk says its the windows XP installation disk and i only have had one machine with wnindows XP so it must be for my machine. One thing i had noticed was that the green light on the disk drive wasnt flashing when i was trying to get it to boot from it! Maybe the drive is busted as well!!

Cheers for help and il let you know what happends in the morn.

Kev.

Before reformatting it and starting again, try removing unused cards (TV card, etc).. Strip the system back to the bare essentials..

Also try removing and reseating everything.. Graphics card, Memory, HDD Cables, etc..

I have seen similar things on older PC's where memory has become loose due to continual heating and cooling.

Get the air duster out and give it a blast to make sure there's no dust, etc. I~f the memory contacts are dirty, try using some contact cleaner.

Hope this helps.
