DSG fuel consumption

Featured Replies

I am due to go to Whitstable on Sunday for the day, which is a trip I used to do regularly in my Octavia vRS TDI and get an improvement in consumption from 40-41mpg usual level, going up to 43-45mpg for the run (180 miles round trip mostly on the M-Way M25, A2, M2 and driving 'briskly') but have yet to do in Yeti. We'll see.

Well I had a brilliant run to Whitstable and back today, with remarkably easy traffic conditions on the M25, M2 & A2 i.e. no holdups; thus I was able to whisk along at a very respectable brisk pace. I took a slightly easier (shorter but slower) route on the way back via the M11, Harlow and A10.

Stats for the day (from Maxidot) were;-

Knebworth to Whitstable - 91 miles, 1hr 35mins; 35 mpg

Whitstable to Knebworth - 87 miles, 1hr 35mins; 37.1mpg

Like I say; a good brisk run with consumption around my usual average (if you click through on my fuelly link). :giggle:;)

It will be interesting to see what mpg I get once I get my Shark Performance remap done (still haven't made it up to Mansfield, hope to do so soon).

Is it that DSG doing the damage? My manual CR170 4x4 TDI has never come close to recording such low figures. My average never drops below 40mpg, is usually around 45/46mpg, and on a decent run involving a few motorways and cruising at the legal limit - the French one ;) - I get in the region of 49mpg

I don't feel that it is the DSG 'doing the damage' as it is effectively a manual.

It is more likely that I was travelling at more like Autobahn speeds with 90% of the trip being M'way and that it is only a CR140 (thus having to 'work' a bit harder). ;)

The funny thing is, I drive Elsie the Helipad around London for about 90% of the time and my average fuel consumption is better than bahnstomers and 900k's......Though it is falling with every tankful.

I find on level roads at 30mph, if you don't have to do much stop starting for junctions/traffic lights I can get the maxidot, which is pretty accurate (see my fuely link as well), to give me an average of 50-60mpg.emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

The 'damage' to fuel consumption occurs in stop start town traffic, which is why I use the Skoda supplied start stop technology in Elsie.......I just love the key....emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Stop/start traffic ... and I guess hefty size 12 right feet!

.... thinking about the above comments and that my journey yesterday was pretty much all on the Motorway I wonder if my 'Rallyflaps' are having more of an aerodynamic drag effect than I perhaps have given them credit for.

Size 11 in fact, but they are a bit heavy aye, hence the paltry 33mpg! Filled him up on Saturday and it was the most expensive tank ever for me! £70! (he was near empty and diesel was 140,9 a litre). My A2 had a 34 litre tank so even it was £2 a litre I would not have paid £70 for a tank!

I fill ours up every month, wether it needs it or not. ;)

8 months... 2400 miles.

Good grief!!

I can do that in 6 weeks :'(

Shame on you! Don't you know people are queueing up to buy this car, and you've got one that you're not using!

Where I drive, which can be anywhere in South London, you can't use your right foot much emoticon-0136-giggle.gif, unless you are the front of a queue and there are no vehicles the other side of the junction.........rare. Unless it is later evening, which is when I tent to get my best fuel consumption.

I have a diminutive size 44 (9 1/2 - 10 in old money).

Good trip up to Fulham, about 37mpg. not so good coming back, about 33mpg. One day I will dig out my old receipts and work out what the Octavia was doing, and also the petrol Polo.....just for comparison.

I had a thought that, whilst it has been mentioned in a previous post, it would be interesting to compare the consumption on the 'fueley website' used by myself, Rockhopper (SMike) and 900000 (MonsterJ) of other CR140 DSG Yeti.

This can be seen by clicking on the 'petrol pump' in my signature and then going to 'Comparison'(3rd box down on the right of the page).

From here it can be seen that, whilst we feel that our consumption is on the poor side, it is by no means the worst, and needless to say, it is not the best.

For ease, have a look here;- http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overview/45-Skoda/1154-Yeti.html?fueltype=1&vehicletype=1&constyear_s=2008&constyear_e=2012&power_s=98&power_e=108&gearing=4

I have been keeping an eye on yours and 900k's. The others are all foreign Diesel DSG's. and they appear to be driven gently......emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I thought it would be interesting to compare what my old Octavia 2.0 PD140TDI DSG L&K estate did, with Elsie the Helipad.

Octavia 2.0 PD140TDI DSG L&K with 85000 miles on the clock.

20mph average speed: 423 miles @ 38.0mpg. Maxidot showed 43.2mpg.

22mph average speed: 408 miles @ 40.7mpg. Maxidot showed 45.3mpg.

17mph average speed: 377 miles @ 36.3mpg. Maxidot showed 43.1mpg.

19mph average speed: 447 miles @ 38.8mpg. Maxidot showed 43.6mpg.

My 1.4 3 door petrol VW Polo did around town about 35mpg.

Elsie the Helipad with to date 7000 miles on the clock.

19mph average speed: 403 miles @ 35.6mpg. Maxidot showed 35.7mpg. (maxidot corrected)

17mpg average speed: 347 miles @ 35.4mpg. Maxidot showed 35.7mpg. " "

20mph average speed: 137 miles @ 37.2mpg. Maxidot showed 41.5mpg.

21mph average speed: 410 miles @ 36.7mpg. Maxidot showed 40.6mpg. (winter tyres)

So my conclusions.......

The Yeti is about 2-3mpg less economical than the Octavia, which is not as much difference as I thought it would be. The barn door aerodynamics barely affect it at town speeds, but the 4x4 drag in the Haldex will.

I suppose the giveaway there is the average speeds you're recording, indicative of the number of miles you spend in town, and stop start traffic. My long term average speeds are in the high twenties/low thirties, and my mpg an awful lot better (also adding weight to the idea that the Yeti body shape is not a major factor here).

140 DSG Octavia (PDI) 4 years old 94000 miles.1500+ miles to Outer Hebrides and back.Mixture of motorway, A roads some pretty quick driving and 500 miles on the islands tootling about. Very little traffic apart from crawling along a very busy M8. Average 49.5 mpg according to comp.

Looks like I will have to brace myself for much lower figures this time next year when mine fially arrives!

Great trip and the folk up the west coast are fantastic.

Mind you at 152.0 per litre in Stornoway they can`t afford to travel a long way.

With my old Impreza you had to turn up the audio volume from the default "barely audible" setting every time you re-started the engine. Although it shouldn't have been, it was enough to dissuade me from using its stop-start technology very often. The Yeti is significantly better in that respect.

Odd! I have an Impreza. Don't (one day might say didn't) have any of those problems with key "off" or volume resets. Mind you, one doesn't/"shouldn't" really stop petrol turbos without a cooling down period, so rockhopper's stop/start technology wouldn't work for me!

Very little traffic apart from crawling the M8 around the grim place that is Glasgow which was full of Jocks probably on their way to some football/religious related set too or just using up some more of "oor oil" as they say. Great trip and the folk up the west coast are fantastic and speak the queens English better than most in the UK and don`t seem to carry the chips on both shoulders worn by many of those across the central belt of Scotland.

Scots are like piles, fine as long as they stay up there! If Scotland is so wonderfull why do they all come down here, must be the midges.

PS Don`t you think Alec Salmond looks like a toad? Let them have their independence I say so we can no longer subsidise them!!!! rant over. Mind you at 152.0 per litre in Stornoway they can`t afford to travel a long way south.

Their are some really nice Scots and having worked for a Glasgow company for 12 years (thankfully mainly from home!) there is a mistrust among some of the English.

I might be the only one who finds your post a bit out of place and out of order but I'm not a Scot and have no particular feelings one way or the other but this sounds a bit offensive...both to Scots generally, and to Mr Salmond in particular. Can't see what it's got to do with the topic in hand to be honest

I find it very offensive (I'm not a Scot) and very ignorant. Glasgow for starters is a very fine City and though I disagree with everything else said I would not have commented if it had not been stated in an offensive manner.

Apologies! I have edited my post and perhaps should not have aired my rather biased and unrelated thoughts on here.

PS rangers for the league!

PS rangers for the league!

I have checked and it is mathematically impossible for Berwick Rangers to win the league this year. I like your commitment though.

Mmmm, maybe not Maffa. If those London boys are getting poor consumption because of their clogged up roads. ;)

I'm getting steady mid 40s in everyday use around W. Yorks. I live between Hebden and Tod, and commute to Bradford centre over Oxenhope Moor each day ... then do a fair bit of driving out to places like Ilkley, Knaresboro, York, Sheffield, Mancs for work. I got 49ish on a long trip to France, similar to the kind of Scotland trip you describe, and I got 52+ on a trip home to Norfolk via M62/A1/A17 recently.

Apologies! I have edited my post and perhaps should not have aired my rather biased and unrelated thoughts on here.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: Nothing like a wound up sweaty!

Maybe the air is a lot cleaner and sweeter in Gods own county.

Thankfully my days of traipsing round the home counties are coming to an end!

Old Johann and the lads should get themselves up here and we can race over fly flats if he wants some proper off road. Mind you probably lose them down a pot hole!!!
