Turbo Doing Police Car Impression

Featured Replies

The turbo, I assume, suddenly started doing emergency vehicle impressions after I accelerated vigorously away from a junction. It has quietened down somewhat now but I can still hear it wailing up and down the octaves. Will the dealer be interested in my claim of a noise or is a tangible failure needed? Oil levels are fine.

as you are still in warranty, and it is a known fault, i would ask for a replacement under warranty.

my vrs did exactly the same thing 4 weeks after i had just bought it {june of this year} it was just out of the warranty with 61k on the clock, but my dealer was good enough to replace my turbo with a brand new one.

its all down to how good your dealer is really

It is on its way out if it is doing this - get to the dealers and insist on a replacement. Don't wait for it to fail as they have been known to take out intercoolers when they fail.

Taking it in to the dealer (Gordon Lamb) on Monday. Not getting obviously worse but they do seem to be taking my comment seriously.

I gave a passenger a lift without telling them and they asked which direction the ambulance was coming from- so it's not just me that hears it.

Fingers crossed for next week.

I had the police siren noise, dealer said it wasn't a problem, two weeks later it literally went bang and wiped out the intercooler and boost piping plus EGR valve, shrapnel from the compressor and/or turbine was found lodged in the bulkhead soundproofing.

Be very gentle with the engine for the time being, no high revs and no full throttle, keep the turbo as unloaded as possible.

Mine went pop under a high load which no doubt made things much worse.

Thanks for the video. But no, sounds just like a police siren without the metallic squealing.

Fingers crossed that it does not go in a big way.

Mine started to whistle when the dealer changed the engine oil to synthetic. When cold, it is quite, as soon as the oil gets warm & thins a bit it makes a noise. Not that bad a noise, but certainly noticeable.

Said to be a problem with a turbo hose -no detectable play in the turbo. Noise disappears at higher revs and also occurs when slowing down, turbo is boosting fine and no faults logged. Spoke to the workshop foreman. No problem with driving meanwhile, they say.

Going into the dealer next week for replacement bits. Watch this space.

I got the dreaded police siren too, mine is on 89k , im gonna get a turbo off ebay , there is lots on there from other vag cars - does anyone know if they will fit as they have all different part numbers but are from the same engine. Also is it a bolt on job, I hope it does not cost too much to swap?

Turbo is apparently gubbed(as they say up north) but car is still drivable. Got to wait until 17th January for the parts and a loan car to coincide.

If it sounds like this then its goosed

That sounds more like a high speed drill

Octavia is in today (fingers crossed) at Gordon Lamb's having a new turbo installed at 25,000 miles. The Police car impersonation has not got much worse over the last two months. I've avoided using it on very long trips, just in case. May take two days under warranty.Watch this space.

Got a brand new 51kW Fabia loan car, in red. Impressive town mpg and beats my diesel Octavia from cold , at 39mpg. Cross country almost as good as the Octavia at 42mpg.

Only done 500 miles from new but the performance is very torquey and hill climbing is no bother. I'd a Corsa loan car last year which was so sluggish I was embarassed.

My VRS tdi has been doing this for the last 2 years and has definitely had it's share of full boost moments..........am I really driving a time bomb???

I can't comment on yours but when setting off in a morning before I get out of the 30mph zone it gently "weees" as I drive. As I speed up the sounds goes away. it's been doing it since my remap in September 2009 and occasionally gets a bit of full throttle. Fingers crossed :o Mine's the 2.0 TDI remapped to 170 or so.

Mine has done this since Ive owned the car at 16K Now on 74k and never had any problems. If the turbo is gonna fail when is most likely?

Update. New turbo installed and test drive in the dark went OK. Only hiccup so far is that at least one wheel was removed and a nut cover is missing. Got some spares so not a real problem.

Pernickety customer satisfied by Gordon Lamb in time for an airport run next weekend.

Wonder how much that will cost Skoda UK?

Can anyone tell me if I buy a turbo from another VAG car ie- Seat Leon 170 tdi FR , or Golf tdi 170 - would the turbo fit the octavia - I have had a quote from Skoda to supply and fit £1325... on ebay there are turbos from golf/seats etc for £360 ish - I need to know asap as my turbo is getting louder and louder !!! :'( :'(

Think very carefully before just buying something from eBay. Think about whether you can trust it.

Plenty of reputable companies specialising in turbo supply, and also in upgrade/overhaul.

But yes, to answer your original question, a turbo from another PD170 car (Golf, Leon etc) would fit. Presumably it's a PD170 you have? Bit unclear from your profile info.

Yeah its a PD 170 - I bought one anyways, spoke to the company first they were very knowledgeable and were a pleasure to deal with , got a turbo from a golf 170 with 20k on the clock - will have it fitted soon

Which company did you deal with?

I've done a few hundred miles now and am sure I can just hear the faintest of wails at low speed as the new turbo speeds up. I'm sure there was no noise at all before the recent problem, but maybe I'm just over sensitive now. Does anyone have a completely silent turbo on a 2l PD140 diesel?

The oil was not changed during the recent tubo replacement. I'd have thought new bearings deserved new oil.
