Wheely Stuck

Featured Replies

Well it's a nice day I thought, would be nice to clean the car I thought - even better if I took the wheels off to clean them I thought - Doh!

Front wheels came off easy - no prob, but when it came to taking the rear wheel off the N/S/R - would it shift - would it Bu@*#r as like. I spent 25 minutes trying to remove it - just as well I was using proper jack and axle stands - dread to think how dangerous it would have been stuck on the side of the road.

Anyway, once both rears removed found that the hub corrodes sticking better than superglue - simple to fix, good stout wire brush and small amount of copperslip - and all's well.

Even better the wheels & calipers now look brand new again - esp after following the tip I saw elsewhere on Briskoda about Autoglym extra gloss on the calipers.....

The moral of this story -- make sure you can get your wheels off -- I think an hour spent safely at home removing and cleaning the wheels easily saved or couple of hours or more at the side of the road.

I think this is a known problem , I hate to think how bad mine will be by now , almost 2 yrs old , going in for its 1st 20K/2 yrs service in a fortnight and the wheels have never been off since I got it. Some mechanic at my dealer is in for some fun with a rubber mallet i think!

na we don't use rubber mallets we use sledge hammers.

They use one on mine , ill be using it on their faces!

C'mon chaps. big k is joking! What dealers actually do is raise the car on a 'wheels free' hoist, remove the wheel nuts, and then drop the hoist as fast as possible without letting it hit the ground. With luck all 4 wheels will bounce off into the distance as they hit the ground. (Ever wonder how your car came to be returned from the dealer with tyre marks on the doors?)

Nice one Denis

I dread to think how close to the truth you might be!!! I'm loosing faith in dealers and when I can work our how to post jpegs I'll show you why...

Just a quick note guy's -- don't expect the dealers to take the wheels off without being prompted -- it's not part of the service,as all brakes can be checked without,so if you think wheels may be stuck - you will need to ask them to do this....................

I had the same problem while trying to swap one of the rear wheels for the spare after a slow puncture. Had to take it to a friendly local garage who knocked it off for me and put copper grease on the mounting. At my first service I got the dealer to take all the wheels off and grease them up.

Whilst at the local garage (my dealer is about 30m away) the mechanic told me a customer who has a Passat had the same problem while travelling in England and called the AA. Apparently the AA guy ended up tying a rope 'round the alloy wheel & tried to pull it off with his van!

I dunno whether he was winding me up but I don't think that I'd be too happy to see my alloy being trailed down the motorway.

What I've done in the past is to slacken the bolts about haf a turn, drive forwards slowly and hit the brakes. You just need to make sure that you slacken off the bolts enough to come off the taper, but not so much that the wheel will come off the spigot when it releases. Works well, but I've not had to do it on my RS yet!

Never had this problem myself

Had it with one rear, applied a little leverage between brake caliper and back of alloy and it came away easily...

(realised I had waited too long to swap my tyres, front were a bit worn, swapped em anyway so now I'm in oversteer mode :D)

Changed my wheels around ready to change a couple of my tyres a couple fo weeks ago and was wondering whether I would encounter this problem. Even got myself a couple fo axle stands ready for it.

Typically I had no problems removing any of the wheels; my RS is kept in the garage.......wonder whether this has anything to do with it i.e. not being exposed to the elements etc?

Cheers.

Adrian.

Sounds like a nice job for a day in July methinks...

Q.

PS. Just posting so I can find the thread again in my control panel :D

i take wheels of every car in for service (after 20k) and check and re-grease pads front and rear if only every technician was as reliable as big k lol.

big k,

Can I get my car serviced at your garage, even if I'm a couple of hundred miles away, please? :)
