The motor manufacturers have made a lot of advances in terms of engine efficiency over the years power output per cc has also incresed

Yes I know fuel is more expensive in comparison

This is a bit sad but I have always kept a log on fuel consumption

But in the old days we paid for gallons

1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 litres

Interesting, but I had a 1995 VW Passat 2 litre petrol which returned 40mpg on the motorway at 70mph, my 1.2 Fabia returns just under that in the same conditions! Also, had a Toyota Paseo 1.5 which would easily do 45mpg so again better than the Fabia... so its not all major advances.

But in the old days we paid for gallons

1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 litres

since I've been driving its doubled I'm sure it was around 64p a litre!

My first car a metra 1.3auto used to do an impressive 18mpg!!!
