Stones / gravel trapped in brakes

Featured Replies

Hi, for the 3rd time in one week I have had to stop my 2008 Superb 170 Elegance hatch DSG with screeching noises coming from the brakes.....once from the o/s front (one week after having new discs fitted) and now twice on the n/s rear! The first two times the noise was incredible and the main dealer examined the brakes and pronounced them fine although one of my new discs was scored. This time I have had the noise in reverse and managed to free the stone by pressing the backplate in. The car has 18" Thermisto wheels....are they particularly vulnerable to this? We have had a lot of snow in East Yorkshire and the car is hopeless in it.......it must be picking up gravel from the treatment laid down by the council. I have never had this problem in any other make of car and I have owned over 30 , and driven them in all conditions in the last 37 years.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

Stones getting trapped between the back shield and the disc is not just a problem with VAG vehicles. It is very common with all disc brakes. Normally the remedy is extremely simple, bending the shield closer or further from the disc. Retired motor vehicle technician with over 40 years experience.

It's not that common, my Octy did it a lot though - never had it on the Superb - yet ;)

Not had this on mine yet either, 2008 with 18" Thermistos, now on 30K miles with original disks and pads.
