Wireless Broadband Access

Featured Replies

We've finally got broadband - wooohooo.

I'm looking for some help.

SWMBO has a laptop and wirless network card.

I also have a laptop and wireless network card.

We share a printer through a wireless print server - but share nothing else!!!

Can we arrange for both of us to get broadband access without having to set up a PC server and without having one of the laptops as a server. Sometimes I need acess when SWMBO is out with her laptop and vice versa.

Basically what i am trying to do is set up a Hotspot just for me and SWMBO.

If anyone can suggest a Linksys product that would do the job, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

we've got a Linksys WAG54G, it's an ADSL modem/router/access point all-in-one jobby. piece of **** to set up, have had a couple of issues with it dropping the wireless connection tho...

I'm within a week of getting a Negear DG834G to sit beside my PC here... It means I'll still be hardwired, but will allow other peeps net access, to which they'll be contributing toward... excellent!

I got a silly Q - I obviously have my wanadoo setup with broadband - what setup of internet do the other people need, or is it just the case the router will send out the internet signal I get from the ADSL?

i think there is a bit missing from the name there, "smells of" maybe? :P

the router connects to tinternet and you connect to the router. one for all and all for one

J,

when you put the splitter in the phone socket is splits out the analogue (voice) and digital (data) content.

The data connect goes to your ADSL Router. As long as you have set up your user name and password and have the correct parameters set for the UK (VPI = 0 VCI = 38, VCMUX, and perhaps G.DMT) as well as wireless and encryption to allow your mates to access......you should be ok.

Obviously your going to connect via ethernet. WHne installing your Wanadoo software this may be purely for the USB Modem...mine was for Tesco......I just set up my router and use the IE icon to connect.

If you have a great deal of problems I can send you a set-up doc...that we did at work. ;)

WAG54G will do....however to set it up you will need to connect via ethernet first...you can then set up the wireless connection. Both laptops should be able to see the ESSID you set. Would you set encryption to WEP and choose a single keycode...the laptop should pick up the ESSID but they'll need the keycode to access.

WAG54G is approx

My recommendation would be the Linksys wrt54g 4 port switch + 802.11g

I can get the DG834G for

not totally true true adrian, i have 2 wag54g's and set both from straight out of the box via wireless on the laptop. very good units but seem to be having trouble with droppind the wireless at the mo

Thanks chaps

Linksys WAG54G it is.

Wish me luck.

Once it's working, turn on MAC address filtering and enable some level of WEP security. It is a pain to get WEP working if you don't make notes (and keep them) but it's worth it if you only want to share things between you, your Mrs and the printer ;)

Well what a nightmare.

We have spent most of today trying to set this up.

Although we can get internet access through a cable connection, wireless connection has beatten both of us and Linksys Technical help desk.

Not that the help desk were of any help. First the idiot got me to delete all my settings to acess the network at work - then he got me to uninstall the drivers for my network card. The driver disk is on my desk at work so I can't do anything til Monday.

Think Monday morning will be a barrel of laughs.

One point that I think is becomming clear:

My work network requires a static IP address

The wireless print server at home gives out a static IP address in a different range to the static IP address at work

The broadband access at home requires dynanic IP addresses.

What chance have have I got of being able to acess the print server and the gateway at the same time - and, ideally, without out having to bugger about with settings from my work set up???

Hope you can help.

Paul

Why not download a driver from the net so you can play with the card over the weekend.

As for the setup, there will be a way to change the print servers IP, and the router can be set to use static IP's. If you don't want to change work settings, you'll have to give your router the same IP as the one at work, and give the print server an IP on the same subnet. All of this is assuming a relatively simple small network at work.

Edited to say: Also, while setting up, Broadcast your SSID, and turn any encryption and MAC filtering off...you can turn it all back on when the network's up and running.

So they both had the wireless active point turned on, with no encryption, as default?

I had a Netgear Wireless setup which caused me no end of trouble. My house is fairly new and has foil back plasterboard - forget wireless!!!

Got meself the Netgear DG834UK which is 4 port router, firewall and modem. Took less than 15 mins to get my PC, laptop and 2 printers all connected and talking to each other.

The other users will just use your access point by opening a browser window.
