VRS clutch biting point?

Featured Replies

Hello, looking for some quick help. I have just been to see a Fabia VRS which I might buy but I'm a little confused about the clutch.....

Does the biting point of a clutch whether its at the bottom of the pedal range as opposed to the top of the pedal range have any direct correlation with the wear/condition of the clutch ?

The one I have just driven seemed like the biting point was somewhere between the middle to the top, I did however, put it in 6th gear @30mph an let it accelerate to 80 without any slipping ?

The cars a 54 plate with 37500 miles, two owners and extras like 6cd changer and cruise control for £4400, what you guys think ?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

simon

p.s is the steering any heavier in the Fabia vrs compared to a 2004 1.2 polo, as it certainly felt more weighted but still had assistance if you know what I mean?

bite the guys hand off!

Price sounds good - my clutch takes up near the bottom but I'm not sure it's correct - sometimes needs pushing right down to get the gears to engage.

Check cambelt changed at 4 year point - since the car's not got to the 60k limit

That's similar to my 1.2 polo the now, if I don't get it right down then it crunches, so I'm not sure what car is in the right or if its normal just to be different.

But yeh, cam belt was done at 4 years so that's fine(or so the book says). lol

cheers, si

That's one cheap vRS for the milage! I'd take it (although make sure it hasn't been written off, that's almost a 'too good to be true' price). The steering is likely to be heavier than a 1.2 polo, you've got to accelerate a massive iron diesel lump as opposed to a tiny petrol one.

The more worn a clutch gets the higher it bites, so if its biting low thats a good thing (although do these cars not have self adjusting clutches, so I could be wrong?)

No cambelt is not too mecu of an issue at that mileage, just do it when you gety round to it (although sooner rather than later would be better as said, its past teh 4 year milestone), even with ~300 for a cambelt service its still goin to be a cheap car.

First off, dont drive it like this when you own one whatever you do!

Secondly, my clutch bits around the same place, has done since i bought it, with the standard clutch and uprated.

Matt

mines same and it's only had a clutch 2 months ago as they clutches are self adjusting hydraulic clutches and will bite in the same place until it can't adjust out anymore, then it will start slipping. mine was fine when i bought it or so it seemed, 3 months later it was slipping. but hey ho can't complain, it happens.

Seconded, you'll kill your flywheel. Mine has just started rattling ever so slightly :S

My clutch has always had a fairly high biting point.

But even if that car needs a clutch, that's a decent price. If it doesn't, it's an excellent price!

thanks for the replys, you have reassured me that the clutch will be fine

but I promise I would NEVER put it in 6th gear and floor it @30, I only done it to make sure it wasn't going to slip.

I HPI'd it and it came back fine with no reports of it being written off, but he said he was the 2nd owner and according to the HPI he is the 4th :S so gonna call and see what that's all about.

Only problem with the car was the leaky rear doors, but ohwell, I'll see.

Thanks for your help. Si

If a dealership took it in a PX then that counts as an owner. That may explain that.

No it doesnt, its registered as bring "in trade" it doesnt add a owner.

All former keepers, not owners, are listed. Allow me to elaborate directly from personal experience on my previous car: the person had it from new (her name was on all documentation, meaning service schedule, manual etc not V5, and I spoke to her before I bought it), she transferred it to her husband (whose name was on the V5), and later on they traded it in, and as it was just a snotter run-about the dealer they traded it in with passed it on to auction, it was then bought by another dealer, whom I purchased it from.

So, in truth it has had 2 owners (3 if you include me now), yet the HPI check stated it had 4 keepers (not including me). Go figure.

When a dealer or trader gets the car, they register it being with them but this doesnt count as another owner. I traded a car in once, then after having the new car for a few weeks, it packed up big time, so i took my original car back, they hadnt sild it thankfully, but it didnt have any extra owners on it when i got it back.

When a dealer orders in a brand new car that hasn't actually been ordered by anyone it's registered to the dealer and on the V5 classing them as the first owner.

This was the case when I bought my gti180 from the dealer forecourt, they ordered the car to put on forecourt but it had to be registered to someone before it was released or something along those lines so even though I was the first official owner the V5 said I was the second.

Thats how a preregistered car works yeah, but thats when they are trying to bump up the sales figures.

However, this isnt the case every time. Some dealers of certain makes will have shed loads of mid spec models sitting about waiting to be bought, my mate bought a new Corsa. He went and looked at it the next day, and collected it pretty quickly, he was the first owner of it.

Incorrect I'm afraid - that only happens when cars are pre-registered by dealers, potentially to meet end-of-month sales targets. Other cars in dealers stocks remain unregistered until someone buys them at which point they become the first owner. The 2004vRS I bought new was in the showroom when I bought it - and I was the first owner on the V5.

There is an important difference - or at least used to be - between being a first owner and the second owner of a pre-registered car. If the car is written off during the first year an insurance company will replace it with a brand new one but a similar situation with a pre-registered one would see a payout being made - lower than the replacement value. Don't know whether that's still the case...

Oke, so got the info from the guy, it was a demo car to start with, and the garage who took it as a trade-in before the current owner bought it had registered it to tax it or something so thats cleared that up so its cool.

But about the price...... it was only advertised locally for £5250 but he didn't put it on the main places such as Autotrader and Ebay otherwise it probably would have sold straight away, so I badgered him down to 4400 as he said he was just going to sell it to "webuyanycar" which is still 300 odd more than they were going to give him, so in the end everyone's a winner. But book value apparently is 4750 according to what car valuations.

So will get it in the next couple of days :D

But my next question is... I need to tax it before I pick it up b/c it ran out in November but he doesn't have it insured anymore, do I need my insurance certificate and the mot to get tax, as I was planning on just transferring my insurance from my current car over to it so will need to wait for a cover letter or something?

any ideas ???

cheers, Si

depends on the garage, some garages offer 'free 7 day insurance' for taxation purposes, some will just tax it (the guy I bought from just did it) on fleet insurance.

You`ll need MOT and Insurance cert to tax it. If you can inform you insurance company a few days before, they could prob get the certificate to you in time, or get them to email it to you?
