Speccing up a Yeti

Featured Replies

I'm going to book a Yeti in another month or so, and there are a few things I'm not quite sure about.

In India, as of now, there's only one model available, albeit, in two trim levels. I'll be taking the Elegance version.

It's the 2.0 Diesel with 140 bhp, a six-speed manual, and the 4x4 Haldex clutch.

The dealer has told me that the DSG version will come on sale in July 2011, and I don't whether to wait for the DSG or go with the manual.

Also, the car is fitted with a Bolero music system, and the dealer claims that it does not have Bluetooth. Is it true?

Help :\

Hi and welcome sapm5.

The auto version has a 'Tiptronic' gearbox, meaning you can treat it like a manual, so If you really want an auto, then its worth waiting for.

If the Bolero is the same as the Bolero spec here, then yes it will have BT (Bluetooth) meaning that you can pair your phone (depending what make model it is!!) and iPod.

I have the 2.0L 140hp Auto DSG, and its simply BRILLIANT. :giggle:

Yes,welcome Sapm5.I'm not sure I'd want the complexity of the DSG box .However make sure you get the spare wheel/wheels.

Thanks for the advice! :D

But my current car is almost six years old, every time I go out in it, in the chaotic, and Very Dangerous Delhi traffic, I feel scared. Safety was my primary concern, and that why I chose the Yeti. That is why I need a new car as soon as possible. The Superb didn't make it to my list as at 4.6 meters,it's too big, and the Indian-spec version does not get the automatic parking option. And also because I'm not a very good driver. :p

Also, with the DSG, I've heard that overtaking is a bit of a problem, as the gearbox takes some time respond, and you aren't sure whether to make it or not. That is something I'm worried of. Yes, I know DSG's are very good, after a short drive in a Superb 1.8 TSI DSG-7, but that had 160 bhp, and there was loads of power and torque to over-ride the gearbox's hesitation. But is it possible in a diesel?

Also the Indian spec Yeti does not get half the goodies, like powered and heated seats a few off-road settings, and some more. But the spare wheel is standard, though it limits you to 80kph.

If there's anything you guys can add, I'd greatly appreciate it.

P.S : Amazing forum! Possibly the first forum which has helped me LOTS. :D

The DSG has absolutely no problems down changing, you couldn't change down any faster yourself. We are only talking about milliseconds here, not seconds. I have driven diesel DSG equipped cars for 40,000 so far and overtaking was a breeze. The diesel DSG has a 6 speed gearbox currently. It is brilliant. I have only done just over 250 miles in my new Yeti.

With regards Bluetooth, The Bolero does NOT have bluetooth built in. You have to have a separate Bluetooth car kit fitted, which is standard spec in the UK, for it to work.

I absolutely agree - the DSG is also much better than conventional auto boxes, IMO, in that - if you want to keep the gear down a notch, you can - even the old tiptronic on conventional VW auto boxes changed up, it seemed, when they thought appropriate - and when it usually wasn't - ie in overtaking.

I drove 60,000 miles in a 140 DSG Golf - it was superb, and a big reason for me wanting a Yeti. In fact, in my 140 Yeti at least, they have greatly improved the turbo lag over my MK5 Golf engine. I can pull away at roundabouts, for instance, much better than I could in the Golf, although the Golf was overall a much quicker car, being smaller and lighter. To my mind that is one of the very few legitimate downsides of any kind of auto box - you can't do the 'keep the revs up and drop the clutch' thing like you can in a manual, to counteract lag. I don't miss that with the Yeti. Hope this makes sense - it's late!

Thank you all! :)

I went to the Skoda site, and checked the Bolero System Manual, it's written there that, on pressing Setup, and then Phone buttons on the system, Bluetooth gets activated.

I've now decided to wait for the automatic. I'll have to wait for a whole year now. :(

Skoda should really start getting all the powertrain options to India as quickly as possible. Almost every other manufacturer in this segment has an automatic version. Eg : Nissan X-trail(Too expensive), Hyundai Santa Fe(Engine, gearbox, and suspension nearly 2-3 years old, and is therefore rubbish).

Infact, way back in April 2010, when the Yeti(A right-hand version, no test drives) was showcased, they received nearly 100+ orders, though the car was officially launched in November 2010! At that time, nobody knew which engines, transmission options, or trim levels would be released! Almost a 100 people booked the car blindly!

After the car was launched, there's still a huge demand.

Yes I agree, but ONLY if you have Bluetooth preparation. There are many owners on this forum who have the Bolero who thought that they could BT stream etc, only to find out that they needed an extra Bluetooth preparation/car kit for it to work. It will stay 'greyed' out.

Thanks for this. Cost appears to be £395. Is this reasonable? Anyone else do oem retrofits?
