I changed all the arms on my 1.9tdi 4 months ago used febi complete kit and an important instuction given was that unlike normal track rod ends VW or skoda track rod ends must also be adjusted on the pin end as well as the treaded end that is why the pin end has a treaded bolt I just tracked the car using the conventinal method and I notice that it is wearing tyres so it would seem that this outer setting is important can anyone enlighten me?

The height setting of the track rod end joint is adjustable as you describe and is known as "raised toe".

There is a special VAG fixture to set this, but in my experience most dealers either don't know about it or don't bother. It is important to set this correctly otherwise the tyre wear will be excessive and the vehicle handling may be even worse than normal.

Find an independent VAG specialist who is intelligent and interested and ask them if they have the fixture to set the raised toe. If not, move on.

If few have the kit required in Uk some hope in Ireland what is the theory in the raised toe is it to adjust camber of the wheel's. is there a simple way around this adjustment?

Dont worry, sales of front suspension bits are keeping the factors in business here in Kerry so most independents know how to set it up correctly and the stealers do have the kit.

True our roads are a good test for these joints and indeed they are keeping the factors in business it's a pity that most of the aftermarket joints are so poor At the minute you can buy a complete set up here against the border for around 120 euro but they are crap must look into getting the raised toe done asap as I see im wearing tyres

Decided it was time to get the raised toe done It's not as easy as it seems it needs special programme on the 4 wheel alignment system none of the big independent tyre people even knew what I was talking about and the skoda dealer hadn't got one-- his advice put the new ones in at the same level as the old ones the only people who had the system was the VW dealership So beware anyone getting a fancy alignment done at 50 euro a pop just question them on what the dealers call the camber toe if they look strange at you walk on- your wasting your money.

The suspension camber can be averaged between sides by adjusting the lateral location of the front subframe. There are alignment holes in the brackets to facilitate this. The absolute camber settings appear to be non adjustable - as is the castor.

Raised toe has nothing to do with camber - it's a means of setting the toe to be correct over the whole range of suspension travel. It is done by setting the height of the track rod end ball pins.

All of this goes completely to pot if you lower the suspension.

The ignorance and sheer incompetence of "Skoda" dealers continues to amaze me.

[No doubt about their lack of knowledge when it comes to buying equipment for a single model but according to the lad in the VW garage if the height is not adjusted properly on the passat or suberb as you turn the steering it affects the angle of the wheel top to bottom all I know it will wear both the outside and inside of the tyre at an outrageous rate to adjust he turned the steering completely to the left when adjusting the right side knocked the joint down fully with the vertical bolt loose then adjusted upwards until correct it is now a completely different car to drive
