Running hot on idle after pressure wash - fans?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just had my car cleaned by the local foreigners as it was a bit cold to do myself, after having my car idling for about half an hour the temp was up to about 95 degrees, usually it would religiously sit bang on 90 degrees all day long.. so I turned my engine off and the same thing after re-starting it, at idle slowly creeping up to about 95 degrees.

As soon as I started driving it the temperature dropped straight away back down to 90 and pinned there until I stopped again. I carried on cleaning out the car with the car at idle but this time it didn't move and stayed at 90 degrees again.. this was for a good 5 minutes. I then began revving the engine holding it at a steady 2500 rpm which sent the temperature after a few minutes up to about 110 degrees but no higher.

As soon as it hit that temperature i went for a drive, within 100 metes it was down back at 90 again you could literally see the temp gauge near enough swing back when air flow was on the rad.

Now I have an inkling before that whilst idling my car used to have the fan running, but very slowly. Could it be possible the johnny foreigners whilst pressure washing around my car have managed to F*** my fans? I only suggest this because of how quickly it returns to 90 degrees and stays there whilst driving.

I tried to look for some connectors for the fans under the bonnet but couldn't really make out, there were a few connectors down by the battery side which looked like they could be possibly something to do with it but I wasn't sure and they weren't massively accessible in a hot engine bay.

Any suggestions/advice would be great.

Thanks, Lew

Got it booked in at the garage now to see what they say, Never got a chance to have a good luck yesterday and I'm going to be busy now all week :(

Thermostat stuck open would be my guess, or water pump starting to fail.

Hi mate, drove it to work today 15 miles away, fans were working fine when I got there, Did the idling rev thing again absolutely spot on 90 with no problems at all this time... the fans are working again.. Very strange hmmmmmm. Still going to have it looked at though

At idle with the A/c off none of the fans should spin (unless its very hot) One of the fans will spin all the time if the A/c is on. Sounds like its sorted itself out? Did they pressure wash the engine bay?

Well I very rarely have AC off, after being in the snow again for over 2 hours the temperatures started creeping up to about 100 degrees. as soon as I put the temp up on the heating on higher it settled back to 90 degrees fairly quickly. After a run to work the fans were on again but then in traffic I dunno if the fans were on. It's only ever when you seem to be sitting anything more than an hour, I'm starting to think it might be the start of water pump failing but I would have thought it would have heated up a lot quicker than that so i'm not sure
