Morning all. I checked the pressures on my new tyres yesterday (and the wheel nuts!) and they were all at 33.5 psi. which I reckon is too high. I deflated them to 32 psi all round but not sure whether these being XL tyres they need to be higher? Any suggestions? Im not using it on motorways btw, its mainly town and B road.

Cheers, Dan

what size are you running ??

Standard. (forgot to say  ) 205-50-17

I put mine in between the low rating and high rating on the petrol cap. To me the low's too soft and the high is too hard

I don't have a definitive answer to this, but keep an eye on the wear pattern. If you find you're getting excess edge wear wrt the centre, go up 2PSI, and if you're getting excess centre wear, down 2 PSI.

OK, I'll try what your suggesting. Thanks for the help.

I'm running 32 front, 34 rear, mainly motorway.

No problems Dan. I (and several others) did this when we discovered we all had excess edge wear on Toyo T1-Rs (variety of engine and trim levels, different parts of country and obviously drivers).

I'm running 32psi front and 30psi rear. Works for me, and I fiddled with them a fair bit when I first got the car. Tread wear is nice and even too.

So why are some folks running more pressure in the rears, and some running more pressure in the fronts? :S

Makes no sense to me either. The Toyo wear pattern pointed us all the same way, but this suggests that either people are having very different experiences with Falkens, Falken's QC is rubbish, or Falkens maybe just aren't very sensitive to pressure near recommended?

Oh sorry. forgot to say I'm not using Falkens!!

But my tyres are all 205/50R17 93W (XL). Running Avon ZV5's.

I found that much more than 30psi in the rears started to make the back end more skittish, and any less than about 32psi in the fronts made it feel sluggish. I guess the fine tweaking of the pressures between 30 and 35psi comes down to the driver, situation and tyres. 90% of the time my car is totally empty, so there's minimal weight over the back end. Which amplifies the effect of increasing the rear tyre pressure I suppose. If I'm off on a holiday or I'm hauling stuff, then I do pump up the rears a few psi to get them sitting right again.

I had all four wheels off recently for a clean and wax, and measured the tread depth across them all. Found the rears to be perfectly even, and the fronts had slightly more wear on the insides.

Started with 31psi all round kept fiddling till i found the pressure that suited my type and style of driving, like choice of tyre brand, tyre pressure comes down to personal preference. Recently checked tyres when cleaning wheels and wearing evenly. Ran Conti sport 3's before the 452's and pressure in them was 31F, 35R and they wore evenly. just play around with the pressures till you are happy with the wear and ride comfortemoticon-0148-yes.gif

just one to add from me, Ive done 4K on these tyres and OMG they are leathal in the snow and ice. No grip or confidence in them at all.

the Kumho 712 I had on last winter were very good tho.

I have been so lucky as I went onto a small hump for a roundabout up near where Fatty5000 lives I was only going 10mph tops in 2nd and followed the tracks only to find I literally slid off it into the curb. didnt damage rim tho thank god.

In all other conditions tho they are very good if a bit noisy.

billy

That's strange because I fitted a full set just before the first snow hit and they've been OK given that they're a summery tread. My previous tyres behaved like snow was ice, but so far I've not had any major dramas on the 452s.

I just let air out on mine due to weather condition and not using motorways.

29psi Front and 30psi Rear. Normally on front I would be around 30-32psi

Too fast lol about 3 mph is needed there mate :o Rolling on the idle all the way up and back down the hill.

Any summer tread will fail epically around here atm

Hard work getting my street I've had murder tbh. Three trips out and I made one back without a push, can't be arsed trying again :giggle:

+1 there buddy

Car is sitting on drive as although the main routes are ok my street and local side roads are still bad as the left over snow is turning to ice. I was on tickover all around these , Not easy driving these on tickover as 1st gear is too much to cause wheel spin so i am into 2nd gear as soon as. Trouble I get some vibration as either the Powerflex dogbone mount is shot or the gearbox one is?

Recently getting harder to pull away smoothly slowly also.

Any ideas?

New front dogbone bush maybe

The main roads are not much better around here the road me and billy are on about is main route out of north cardiff and it's terrible, I just flew up the A470 at a neck breaking 25mph as the car was skitching and sliding all over the place,, this is on a 70 mph dual carridgeway which serves pretty much the rest of wales ........See here Shocking that it's in that state really seeing as the last snow was Yesterday morning .

I got a shot of the castle so you know I'm in wales lol

yea I was in tickover lol, luckilly the snow was that deep it smooted out the curb lkol and I turned into it,

Went to work on Sat/Sun 0001 and only reason I didnt come home again was fear of what Id already driven on, was thick snow n Ice all the way to the M4 pritty much. the A48 was full of it. not going out again. Normally the bus routes are cleared but not this time, the A470 is really bad to say its the main road up.

Mark,

Was thinking that might work, letting air out.

Absolute chaos in East Cardiff. A48 is a joke.

Been using the Bora as it's been dealing with the conditions well. P6000's on the Bora are only a couple of months old & I haven't had any scary moments yet, but OMG there's so many idiots out there

The VRS is snowed in on the drive now.

mmm tellin me, when I went to work sat night there was a couple of cars left therer and one Golf had spun and smashed up and was just left sticking out in the road. not been out since I got back on Sunday afternoon. The 14hr job will have to do unless it gets seriously better.

I cant believe that even main roads havnt been sorted. cant wait for it to get better so I can find out what these Falkens are really like.

atm its all been Mways.

Yeah I saw the Golf on Sat night looked like it had spun out & o/f suspension looked fecked.

lol thats the one, that made me wanna go home but didnt wanna risk going up a slip road as I had a bad experience last year in a RM truck near Reading. took me 20 mins to get round to head back to Severnbeach. not good when your pulling an empty box trl. the truck spun out on the hill kind of gave it away. Luckily Tesco trucks are rarely empty and even when they are the fridge is a bit heavier.

Dont know when Ill get in again tho as the roads are not done up here. only live 2 mins walk from the M4 but its a 8 mile drive past Fatty's or 12 mile down to A48 and along to it. neither way is nice.

Next year I will be investing in Snow tyres for some std Spiders, Dave you looking to get rid of any? lol

I took mine out on saturday and sunday and didn't have a hard time driving. One understeer moment on a roundabout when I got a touch optimistic about the amount of available grip at the heady speed of 30mph. Fortunately a reasonable size roundabout and nothing touched. Did about 200 miles over the weekend, although I did stick to main roads.

Stopping leaving work on sunday with 4 people and a load of luggage in the car was interesting on the untreated surface (ABS works). Tyres have been working well considering they are summer tyres, the temperatures and the conditions. Mostly just down to correct technique, low revs, high gears and being smooth and gentle with the controls. Saw a car spin on a roundabout this morning we had just got round at the same speed, driver fail.

Lowering tyre pressure in snow isn't meant to help grip as it closes up the gaps in the tread so they clog up more. Although I know people who have found lowering the pressure in the tyres slightly helps grip. Also having narrower tyres in snow will help as will a lighter car.

I run my falkens at 33psi all round, gives me even wear and no problems with grip.
