Cornering fogs on FL Elegance?

Featured Replies

Just had my DRL's enabled by my local dealer on my 2010 Elegance and asked for the cornering fogs to be turned on at the same time. Dealer stated my car didn't have cornering fog lights. Is that correct? I thought all FL Octy's that had fog lights had the ability to turn on the cornering function?

Cheers.

Me too.

I still feel a lot of dealers revert to the "can't be done" if they don't know or can't be bothered to find out.

Try another dealer would be my advice...

I think you only get the cornering lights as part of the Xenon headlight extra package

That's the xenon covering function which is different to the fog light cornering function.

Nope, the cornering fog lights are different from the Xenon light function. The fog lights light up if you turn the wheel below a certain speed (think it's about 25mph). The AFS on the Xenons mean that the headlight change direction with the steering input.

My vRS has the cornering fog lights, but I wouldn't miss them if they got switched off...

tht is not true - cornering lights function has NOTHING to do with xenons being installed or not.

on both the vRS & non-vRS octavias, the cornering lights function (if activated) means that only the one foglight turns on, depending the direction ur turning. i.e. turn left at low speeds, and only the left foglight will activate; turn right at low speeds, and only the right foglight will activate.

IF u have xenons, then not only will the specific foglight turn on (if activated), but the actual low beam (xenons) will "turn" to that direction too. this is known as dynamic or AFL (active forward lighting) lighting.

if u don't have xenons, only the foglight will turn on (if activated).

One foglight turns on, depending the direction your turning.

Not quite. When you select reverse both fog/cornering lights are supposed to come on at the same time to aid visibility when reversing round corners.

considering the previous few posts were discussing drls & xenons, i was talking about "forward" - the direction more often, and commonly driven in.

but yes, in reverse, both front foglights are on.

This is correct, although I am a bit of a loss to see how this helps... When I'm reversing, I'm generally looking behind and to the side of the car and have no real need for extra lighting in front of the car emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Yes I think I have this as I have a Scout with Xenons wondered what cornering thing is about when I go into menu in car memu it has bending light box ticked but I have never seen lights move other then when I switch lights on. Do I need to take car to a dealer to make this work or is it doing it but I just cant see it happening, if it is doing it Im not impressed!

+1.

it doesn't make sense to me either. but that's wat it does.

its funny though, the manual says that the cornering funtion "does not operate (either single foglight) with the reverse gear engaged".

yet the very next line says, when in "cornering" mode, both foglights will activate in reverse gear!!!

WTF?!?!

"bending light" refers to the xenon's "bending" (dynamic/afl) capabilities - not the cornering functionality. i.e. - when driving at night with ur xenons on, u'll notice it 'turn' according to steering wheel turn.

with the vrs, we don't c the "bending light" option, instead we have a "tourist mode" option. this flattens the beam, and disable the xenon's bending/turning/dynamic capability.

the tourist mode is made to cater for u folks who travel between the uk and other european countries.

a way to check its (bending) working is to park in dark place, or at night, with the ignition 'off', turn the light switch position to 'auto' or '2', and switch the ignition 'on'. u'll c the needle sweep and the xenons do their callibration "dance". the xenon's actually do the dance everytime the ignition is switched on - its just that we only notice it when the lights are 'on'.

if u switch the car on with lights off, then turn the lights on, u'll not c the dance.

This all depends on the environment.

I imagine if you a reversing in the dark in an unfamiliar environment surrounded by bollards, low walls and other unknown or unseen obstructions any additional visibility would be welcome, in front, along side or behind.

When reversing round a tight corner the front of the car will swing through a much wider arc than if you are driving forward, at which point the fog/cornering lights will help.

In circumstances such as these I would imagine you may well spend as much time looking through your windscreen and side windows as the rear window.

With the vrs, we don't c the "bending light" option, instead we have a "tourist mode" option.

Not sure if the specs in Oz are slightly different.

Here in the UK, on the FL vRS if you specify the xenon headlights you do get AFS II (Adaptive Front Light System) and the Dynamic Angle Control.

AFS II features include:

1) Interurban – default headlight position for speeds between 0 – 9 mph and 31 – 55 mph.

2) Urban – light beam shortens and widens for better illumination of pavements and junctions in built-up areas; active between 9 – 30 mph.

3) Motorway – light beam gradually lengthens and narrows as vehicle speed increases to improve distant vision; light beam lights the lane to the right of the car to facilitate overtaking; active above 56 mph.

4) Cornering lights – headlight geometry changes and light beam illuminates the curve of the road depending on vehicle speed and steering wheel angle (active from 6 mph); activated by indicators, the fog light strengthens and fades during tight cornering, increasing visibility and highlighting hazards and obstacles in the road.

5) Rain function – headlight modules rotate down and light beam shortens to limit the glare from the road; activated by windscreen wipers (after two minutes) at speeds between 0 - 43 mph.

6) Tourist function – using the maxi-dot computer, driver can switch between right hand drive and light hand drive headlamp angle when abroad.

Is it not the rear foglights that would help when reversing in the dark??? :giggle:

Nah - it's the rear parking sensors! :giggle:

Mine only do their "Dance" :giggle: when I start the engine up, not just with the ignition

I hate to drag this back on topic, but anyone know about cornering fogs on Elegance models rather than VRS's with Xenons? Should these be able to be enabled by my dealer?

Ta ;)

YEs. all octi 2 FL with fog light have cornering.

Right - time to find a different dealer then :D

Right so does that mean as i live in the UK my Xenons dont turn as barr the dance when driving at speed or even if I turn steering wheel stationary with lights shinning on garage door there is no movement! Im Confussed ?????

on oz, the VRS doesn't get AFS equiped xenons - just dynamic angle control.

we do however get #5 (rain) & #6 (tourist), and #4 (cornering) is an optional extra, available on both non-xenon equipped, and xenon equipped models.

sorry GroundHog - didn't mean to stray ur discussion. Good luck with finding a dealer to get ur cornering function working. show them Page 55 of the skoda octavia manual - under "lights and visibility" section. it clearly explains "Fog lights with turning light “CORNER”* function". ;)

The xenons won't 'turn' unless you're moving over 7mph.
