hard-wired sat nav - tom tom or similar?

Featured Replies

I'm considering a project to semi-permanently install a tom tom or similar nav system in the dash-top box of my octavia.

There's plenty of room in there one of the new slim widescreen tom toms or garmins which I plan to hard-wire into the car (or at least build a 12v socket into the box somehow) so it can be hidden when not in use and i'll have no trailing wires..

I'm thinking i'll be able to hopefully work out some sort of hinge mechanism so I can pop the box open, then flip up the nav screen and maybe use a little velcro to secure upright against the box lid (does that make sense!?)

Question: is there a nav system out there that has an option to turn on/ off with the ingition, like an OE nav system? Or would I have to always manually turn it on and off? :

Any ideas/suggestions welcome. :)

Sorry, can't help much but with Tom Tom you can set it to "power off" when the 12v supply has been cut, but not turn on.

Thanks Mike - that's half-way there I suppose :)

Do you know if thats an option on all the new tom toms or just certain models?

TIA.

Rob

My old Garmin 660 would turn on when it got power, and turn off when it lost it (gave a 30 second warning for you to over ride it). I don't know if the newer ones are the same or not though

Hi Rob_e

I have done exactly this in our YETI and posted detailed instructions etc in the Yeti Technical Guides section under: Skoda Yeti - Sat Nav Installation

If you need anything further re circuit diagrams or I can help in any way - just give me a call..........Hope this helps!

An idea: how about fixing the top edge of the nav to the underside of the lid, so that it drops down vertical when you open it? Lid hinges should be strong enough to support it, although you will need to push the bottom in to close the lid.

HTH!
